Dental and Vision Financial Underwriter
Role Overview
The Senior Financial Underwriter supports renewing and prospective moderate to complex group Dental and Vision accounts. This role is responsible for computing rates, analyzing financial and risk data, and preparing offers for new and existing business. The position works independently on complex issues and applies strong judgment when evaluating multiple variables.
The Senior Financial Underwriter partners closely with Sales, Account Management, Product, Compliance, and clients to explain pricing decisions and financial outcomes. This role also contributes to department strategy and helps improve underwriting processes.
Key Responsibilities
Compute rates for renewing and prospective group Dental and Vision accounts
Prepare financial reports and analyses for moderate to complex groups
Provide clear rationale and support for rate calculations and financial activity
Estimate expenses and analyze financial exhibits accurately
Recommend products and competitive pricing to meet customer needs
Review contracts and certificates and partner with Product and Compliance to support plan takeovers
Apply strong knowledge of manual rating systems and experience data in pricing decisions
Negotiate with Sales and Account Management on new and existing business offers
Communicate directly with brokers, agents, and clients as needed to resolve risk, plan, or pricing concerns
Complete administrative processing using underwriting tools, systems, and databases
Document and clearly communicate underwriting decisions
Manage time, workload, and priorities effectively
Mentor and coach team members to support technical skill development
Support training efforts for Sales and underwriting staff as needed
Participate in projects to enhance or improve underwriting processes
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience
Five or more years of experience underwriting Dental and Vision group benefits
Strong experience with financial and risk analysis for rated groups
Comprehensive understanding of risk pool management
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree
Experience underwriting other group benefit lines such as Life and Disability
