Position Overview
The Senior Estimator is responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and detailed cost estimates for a range of project types spanning public/government markets and industrial/private markets. This individual will own the full proposal lifecycle from scope review and quantity takeoff through final submission. The ideal candidate brings construction estimating experience, strong technical writing ability, and the discipline to produce winning proposals in competitive bid environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for public sector (federal, municipal, prevailing wage) and industrial/private market projects, including ground-up construction, specialty foundation systems, and marine/industrial scope.
- Lead the preparation of comprehensive proposal packages, including project execution plans, qualifications statements, technical approaches, and compliance narratives.
- Develop and manage project schedules in Primavera P6 to support proposals and contract execution.
- Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and site surveys.
- Solicit, evaluate, and incorporate subcontractor and supplier quotes into estimates.
- Analyze bid documents, identify scope gaps, and prepare clarifications or RFIs prior to bid submission.
- Coordinate with project managers, field superintendents, and subject matter experts to validate assumptions and production rates.
- Maintain and improve estimating templates, cost databases, and historical bid data.
- Support post-bid reviews and assist in project handoffs from estimating to operations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of construction estimating experience, with demonstrated success in both public/government and industrial or private market sectors.
- Proven ability to prepare full proposal submissions including project execution plans, qualifications, and schedules — not just bid pricing.
- Proficiency in Primavera P6 for schedule development and resource loading.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel (complex cost models), Word (technical writing), Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Strong reading and interpretation skills for construction drawings, geotechnical reports, and technical specifications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft professional, persuasive proposal narratives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HeavyBid estimating software (HCSS) is preferred.
- Familiarity with specialty construction including deep foundations, helical piles, or marine/industrial work.
- Familiarity with working in industrial settings performing civil and structural work disciplines.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
