Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Terminal Operations Supervisor, based in Miami, FL.

The Terminal Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the receipt, handling, preparation, and documentation of loose cargo at the terminal. This role ensures all cargo is properly inspected, prepared, measured, and documented in compliance with company procedures, best practices, regulations, and safety standards. The supervisor coordinates daily terminal activities, manages labor and equipment resources, and serves as a key liaison between Terminal Operations, Marine Operations, Traffic, Vessel Planning, and customers. This position interacts directly with customers and / or their transportation vendors and requires a customer-focused approach to perform excellent service.


Key Responsibilities

Cargo Receiving & Handling

· Supervise the receipt of loose cargo at the terminal, ensuring documentation, quantities, condition, and markings are verified upon arrival.

· Ensure cargo is properly segregated, labeled, stored, and staged according to vessel schedules and loading plans.

· Oversee cargo preparation activities including loading, blocking and bracing, securing, lashing, and container stuffing when required.

· Identify damaged or non-conforming cargo and ensure proper reporting, documentation, and corrective action.


Terminal Operations Oversight

· Coordinate daily terminal operations, including labor assignments, equipment utilization, and work sequencing.

· Monitor yard and gate activities to maintain efficient cargo flow and minimize delays.

· Ensure safe operation of terminal equipment such as forklifts, toploaders, cranes, and other cargo-handling machinery.

· Enforce company safety policies, port regulations, and OSHA requirements always.

· Manage and maintain inventory of consumables and cargo handling and preparation equipment in the terminal.


Documentation & Compliance

· Review and verify cargo documentation including receiving reports, tally sheets, bills of lading, packing lists, manifests, and hazardous cargo declarations.

· Ensure cargo data is accurately recorded on Dock and Warehouse Receipts.

· Coordinate with Traffic and Vessel Planning teams to ensure cargo readiness and compliance prior to vessel loading.

· Maintain accurate records for audits, claims, and regulatory inspections.

Team Leadership & Coordination

· Supervise terminal operators and stevedores as assigned.

· Provide training, guidance, and performance feedback to operational staff.

· Communicate effectively with trucking companies, freight forwarders, and customers regarding cargo status and operational issues.

· Participate in shift handovers and operational meetings to ensure continuity.

Continuous Improvement

· Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend process improvements.

· Assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cargo handling and documentation.

· Support investigations related to cargo damage, loss, or safety incidents.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in logistics, maritime studies, or a related field preferred.

· Minimum of 3–5 years of terminal, port, or maritime operations experience, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory role.

· Strong experience handling loose cargo, breakbulk, or mixed cargo operations required.

Skills & Knowledge

· Working knowledge of port operations, cargo handling practices, and container shipping processes.

· Familiarity with cargo documentation, customs requirements, and hazardous cargo regulations (IMDG a plus).

· Proficiency with terminal operating systems (TOS) and standard office software.

· Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work normal business hours for the terminal, typically 8:00 to 5:00, with flexibility as needed for nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Physical & Work Requirements

· Ability to work in a marine terminal environment, including exposure to weather, noise, and heavy equipment.

· Ability to walk the terminal, climb ladders, and inspect cargo areas as required.


Requirements:

· Valid Driver’s license with a clean driving record.

· The position requires a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), Must be a Permanent Resident or Citizen, and able to pass a federal background check, and obtain the TWIC within 30 days.

· Able to obtain an internal forklift certification within 90 days.

· Must be able to read, write, and speak English and Spanish.

· Able to drive a variety of vehicles.

· Able to establish and build relationships with customers, vendors, and coworkers.
