DESCRIPTION

This position is a full-time tenure track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Health & Safety Sciences Division. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester. Faculty are also responsible for 5 office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. 

Participation in professional activities, curriculum development and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and/or hybrid format, evening and or Saturday classes. This position will be reassigned approximately 20% load corresponding to approximately 5 hours per week to carry out the duties of the Program Director.

 

The director coordinates and directs all activities in developing, implementing, and managing the VN program. This includes fiscal planning. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to meeting and maintaining program accreditation requirements, systematic review of program effectiveness among didactic, laboratory, and clinical components, student recruitment, committee assignments and serving as a liaison with health care facilities.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

• Teach fifteen lecture hour equivalents per semester in nursing, primarily the vocational nursing program, using various teaching methods including demonstrations and active learning strategies.

• Maintain five office hours per week, including regular posted office hours, which are accessible to students. 

• Responsible for preparation time.

• Participate in faculty/division meetings; yearly program review; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes: data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance to advance the college's mission and strategic goals.

• Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.

• Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.

• Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

• Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Travel between District locations is also expected.

• Performs other instructional-related duties and program director related as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Most current Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community Colleges: (Applicant must meet one of the following requirements)

• Specifically named bachelor’s degree(s) or higher and two years of professional experience, and/or other specifications as noted, or specifically named associate degree(s) and six years of professional experience. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment.

• BVNPT requirements:

   ***Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse or Vocational Nurse. Baccalaureate degree from an approved school; and

   ***Have a minimum of three years' experience as a registered nurse; one year shall be in teaching or clinical supervision, or a combination thereof, in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or a minimum of three years' experience in nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years; and

   ***Have completed a course or courses offered by an approved school with instruction in administration, teaching, and curriculum development.

 

Antelope Valley College Equivalency: Equivalency not needed, per division faculty. 

 

AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (tit. 5 § 53024.1).

 

OTHER INFORMATION

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Master's in nursing OR bachelor's in nursing AND master's in health education or health science OR the equivalent OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.

• Knowledge about or experience working with students who are underrepresented in higher academia, with the goal of reducing equity gaps.

• Teaching experience that reflects culturally responsive teaching practices.

• Successful experience teaching vocational or registered nursing at the college or university level.

• A strong "generalist background" and teaching experience in the field of nursing.

• Teaching experience and academic background in one or more of the following: CNA, VN or RN.

• Experience using a learning management system (LMS)

• Experience in developing and revising curriculum, assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in program review documents.

• Current California RN License.
