About the Animal Rescue League of Iowa

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal welfare organization, helping animals and the people who love them through sheltering, adoption, veterinary care, animal services, community programs, and pet support resources. Across multiple locations and programs in the Des Moines metro, the ARL works every day to provide compassionate care, practical support, and trusted resources for animals and families in our community.

What You’ll Do

  • Handle confidential and sensitive employee information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Coordinate entry level recruitment activities, including posting open positions, reviewing applications, communicating with candidates, scheduling interviews, and supporting hiring events.
  • Serve as a welcoming and responsive point of contact for candidates throughout the recruitment and hiring process.
  • Coordinate pre-employment requirements and new employee onboarding, including employment paperwork, HRIS tasks, orientation scheduling, and communication with new hires and supervisors.
  • Assist with benefits administration by supporting employee enrollments, qualifying life event changes, benefit communications, invoice review, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records within HRIS and benefits systems.
  • Respond to routine employee questions regarding benefits, onboarding, and HR processes, escalating more complex matters as appropriate.
  • Track recruitment, onboarding, benefits, and other HR information to support reporting and department planning.
  • Coordinate special projects related to employee engagement, retention, compliance, process improvement, training, and other organizational initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the candidate and employee experience through organized, efficient, and consistent HR processes.
  • Provide general support for day-to-day Human Resources operations and department priorities.

What We’re Looking For

  • 1-2 years of previous experience in Human Resources, recruitment, benefits administration, onboarding, or a related administrative role required.
  • Associate degree in Human Resources or a related field preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in place of formal education.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a professional and approachable communication style.
  • Ability to provide a positive experience for candidates, new hires, employees, and organizational leaders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and comfort working within HRIS, applicant tracking, and benefits administration systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to accuracy, follow-through, continuous improvement, and supporting organizational needs.

The ARL is proud to offer competitive, market-driven compensation and a mission-focused culture. In addition, a variety of benefits are available to full-time employees, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Employer-paid long-term disability and basic life insurance
  • Supplemental insurance options, including short-term disability, supplemental life, accident, and critical illness insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with an employer contribution
  • Veterinary benefits
  • Work-life balance through our expansive holiday and paid time off policies

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

This position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer-based work, occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds, and the ability to work in an environment where animals and allergens such as pet dander, dust, and airborne particles may be present.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Why Join the ARL?

As a Human Resources Coordinator, you will play an important role in helping candidates and employees feel informed, supported, and welcomed. You will have the opportunity to contribute across several areas of Human Resources while helping improve processes and support the people who carry out the ARL’s mission every day.

If you are organized, approachable, and excited to create a positive employee experience in a mission-driven organization, we would love to have you join our team.

Employment in this position is at-will, meaning either the employee or the ARL may end the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice, as permitted by law.
