Job Summary

The Lead Animal Care Attendant is responsible for the disposition and daily husbandry of pets in our care and new pets being admitted into our care. Responsible for delegating assignments to the Animal Care Attendants to ensure all tasks are completed as instructed by the Animal Care Manager.

Responsibilities

· Provide adequate food and water for all pets within the facility.

· Maintain a safe, clean environment for pets and the public at all times by following cleaning standard operating procedures.

· Provide constant humane treatment of handling especially during administration of medications.

· Perform basic shelter management software data entry.

· Observation of the animals for health and behavioral concerns and communication of findings to supervisor.

· Proficiently process incoming pets through an initial physical exam and vaccination administration.

· Scan all pets for microchip ID, examine for tattoos, tags or other identifying features, and communicate findings to supervisor.

· Demonstrate knowledge of veterinary treatments given and accurately enter them into shelter management software.

· Consistently administer veterinary treatments safely.

· Demonstrate leadership in training of processing of incoming pets, proper handling when medicating pets, and other job duties.

· Ability to identify common infectious diseases in pets and report to veterinary team.

· Efficiently conduct Daily Count of pets on Main Campus.

· Run medication and booster reports to ensure all pets currently in care have received required vaccinations and medications.

· Assume duties and responsibilities of Animal Care Manager when they are out of the office.

· Administer skills assessment evaluations for potential new hires and prepare an analysis of candidates.

· Maintain euthanasia certification and euthanize pets as scheduled by manager.

· Provide support in maintaining the grounds and facilities.

· Maintain equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety and report any damaged equipment to supervisor.

· Inventory and stock all supplies needed for shelter operation.

· Provide support for other departments as needed.

· Accurately use other computer programs as required.

· Perform other duties as assigned by Animal Care Manager, Senior Shelter Care Manager, Chief Veterinary Officer, and/or Director of Lifesaving Programs.

Job Conditions

Indoor/Outdoor facility often exposed to the elements. The activity includes both seated office duties as well as animal management activities, which may include handling and restraint of animals that are fractious or excited. This includes pets that may weigh over 50 pounds. Some of the work is done standing, kneeling, walking, and bending. Urine and feces are often present, as are a variety of hazardous chemical agents. Workers are exposed to animal bites, various viruses, needles and other sharp objects. Regularly exposed to strong and pungent odors.

Contact with staff, volunteers, veterinarians, other animal organizations, animal care professionals, and the public. Supervision of volunteers working in processing/kennel area.

Job Requirements

High school graduate minimum: Graduate of animal health/technician school is preferred.

At least two years working with animals in a professional setting (or two years educational experience to substitute) preferred.

Animal Humane prohibits the possession, use or distribution of alcohol, cannabis, and unlawful illicit drugs by employees on Animal Humane’s site and/or while doing business for Animal Humane. Animal Humane may perform drug and alcohol tests for any reason at any time including the following: pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up and random.
