The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for a School Principal at the Intermediate Level (Grades 4-6) for the 2026-2027 school year. This position is located at Curtin Intermediate School; Subject to Determination by the Superintendent.  Requirements:  Preferred candidate must have a PA Principal PK-12 Certification. Previous school prinicpal experience preferred.  Salary per Act 93 (WASA) Compensation Plan.

JOB DESCRIPTION - School Principal

Basic Functions:

The Elementary School Principal promotes a school environment that builds children’s confidence in themselves as learners and encourages their desire and joy in learning.  He/She is a leader who supports effective practices such as developmentally appropriate early childhood education, meaningful applications of the curriculum to the child’s world, flexible times and programs to accommodate the varying learning rate of children, integration of curriculum via thematic instruction and innovative literacy practices.  The Elementary Principal will encourage home and community involvement among school staff, students and parents.

 

The position of Elementary Principal is a 245 day position and shall include active participation in the District’s management team.  This position reports directly to and is evaluated annually by the Superintendent. 

 

Education & Experience:

Bachelor degree;

Pennsylvania Department of Education certification as an Elementary School Principal;

Minimum of five years of experience teaching in an elementary school (urban environment preferred);

Prior curriculum development experience preferred;

Prior principal or administrative experience preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Familiar with the various elementary school curricula and educational programs.

 

Demonstrates ability to recommend innovative programs supported by best practice and research.

 

Requires leadership and the ability to encourage other building administrators, when applicable, to involve the staff in program participation and shared decision making.

 

Must be able to articulate the school and district philosophy regarding the educational process at the elementary school to staff, students, parents and community members.

 

Must have the ability to promote educational development of each student through the application of leadership, supervisory and management skills.

 

Must demonstrate excellent communication skills and experience developing positive parent and community relationships.

 

Must demonstrate the ability to weigh options, think clearly, make decisions in a timely manner and adjust (with positive reactions) to a changing environment.

 

Must demonstrate the ability to continually monitor, review and make adjustments to programs and activities using data-driven school improvement strategies.

 

Must have the ability to develop programs to ensure the safety and welfare of students and staff while providing an effective educational environment.

 

Requires proficiency with computer and software applications as a business and educational tool.

 

Communicates, verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner. Maintains confidentiality of all business-related information.

 

Provides his/her own transportation to attend district meetings, approved seminars/conference, and/or assigned district committees. 

 

Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and attend district events.

 

Ability to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds on a routine schedule and as necessary. 

Authority & Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for and has authority over the programs and staff assigned to his/her building. (E)
  1. Provides leadership and supervision of both curricular and non-curricular programs and staff. (E)
  1. Coordinates the supervision of personnel throughout the building and grounds to maintain appropriate discipline. Is responsible for the conduct of students at all times.  Responsible for the implementation and execution of a School Wide Positive Behavior Plan.  (E)
  1. Responsible for supervising the process of dealing with student issues related to the students’ educational programs, conduct, discipline and attendance. Additional requirements include accurate record keeping and promoting parental involvement in their child’s education. (E)
  1. Completes annual and periodic observations and evaluations of staff as required by State regulations or district policy. (E)
  1. Completes annual and period evaluations of programs as required by State regulations or district policy. (E)
  1. Responsible for the implementation of the curriculum and monitoring classroom instruction to ensure that the District Curriculum is delivered to all students. (E)
  1. Demonstrates an understanding of data-drive decision making and utilizes data to make informed choices to improve student performance. (E)
  1. Provides educational leadership in staff development and training, and assists the Elementary Curriculum Supervisor in district wide curriculum in service training for teachers. (E)
  1. Assists the Elementary Curriculum Supervisor in the development of curriculum and its fiscal management of curricular areas. Supervises the school’s curriculum in cooperation with other District Administrators. (E) 
  1. Develops and implements an annual plan for site-based management of the Elementary School, to include an objective and measurable evaluation of academic progress under this plan. (E)
  1. Oversees the development of the elementary school schedule. (E)
  1. Participates in the screening process for students with special needs and assists with implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). (E)
  1. Implements policies and practices of the District. Completes reports, as required by Central Office personnel, for compliance with federal, state and district needs.  Maintains appropriate records.  (E)
  1. Implements policies and practices of the district and supervises the dissemination of information about these policies and practices to staff and students. (E)
  1. Administers appropriate provision of negotiated contracts with employee groups and organizations providing service to the schools. (E)
  1. Provides leadership in identifying school needs, determining educational objectives, and the process to achieve those objectives. (E)
  1. Participates in the recruitment, selection and evaluation of building staff and shares the responsibility for the induction of new staff members. (E)
  1. Develops, monitors, and manages an annual budget for the school. (E)
  1. Participates in legal proceedings as they relate to the welfare of the students. (E)
  1. Supervises the ordering, inventory, and distribution of instructional and non-instructional supplies and materials throughout the building.
  1. Performs other related functions as directed by Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendent and/or designee.

 

Physical Requirements:

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

 

Must demonstrate the ability to lift, push and pull 50 pounds.

 

This position may involve the controlling of others—seizing, holding, controlling and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive or physically threatening persons to defend self or prevent injury.  Body strength and agility of all four limbs is required.

 

Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.

 

Equipment Used:

Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, etc.
