This position is located at Curtin Intermediate School; Subject to the determination of the Superintendent.  Requirements:  Preferred Candidate must currently hold or is actively working towards PDE PK-12 Principal Certification. Prior school building management experience preferred. Salary per Act 93 (WASA) Compensation Plan.

JOB DESCRIPTION - DEAN OF STUDENTS

Basic Functions:

The Dean of Students serves as a key member of the school leadership team, supporting the creation and maintenance of a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment across the district. This role assists building administration in promoting student growth, ensuring consistent behavioral expectations, and fostering positive school culture. The Dean of Students supports developmentally appropriate practices, reinforces district curricular goals, and advocates for student engagement and well-being.

 

This 205-day Act 93 position reports directly to the Building Principal(s) and actively participates in the district’s management team.

 

Education & Experience:

The requirements for this position are a minimum of PDE Certification as PK-12 Principal, with a preferred tenure of at least five years of classroom teaching experience. An individual in the final stages of obtaining the required PDE Principal Certification may also be considered. 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The Dean of Students must possess a strong understanding of district curricula, instructional practices, and student support systems. This position requires demonstrated leadership ability and a collaborative mindset to engage staff in shared decision-making and continuous school improvement.

  • Leadership and Communication: Ability to effectively communicate school and district goals to students, staff, parents, and community members. Skilled in fostering positive relationships and promoting a student-centered culture.
  • Instructional Support: Knowledge of educational programming and the capacity to support high-quality instruction through observation, feedback, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Behavioral and Operational Oversight: Proficient in monitoring school climate, student behavior, and attendance, with a focus on proactive interventions and restorative practices.
  • Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Able to make timely, sound decisions, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain composure and professionalism in dynamic environments.
  • Technology Proficiency: Familiar with educational and administrative technologies, including the use of data systems for student management, communication, and reporting.

Authority & Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the Building Principal and Assistant Principal in completing his/her day- to- day duties and responsibilities of the school. (E)
  1. Assists the Building Principal and Assistant Principal in dealing with issues related to the student's education program, conduct, discipline, and attendance. Additional requirements may include accurate record keeping and promoting parental involvement in their child's education.  (E)
  1. Assists the Building Principal and Assistant Principal in addressing issues related to students' educational programs. This includes supporting academic interventions, promoting inclusive practices, and encouraging parent involvement to enhance student learning and success. (E)
  1. Supports the administration in managing student conduct and disciplinary matters by implementing consistent behavior expectations, investigating incidents, and applying appropriate interventions. Works to promote a positive, respectful, and safe school environment. (E)
  1. Monitors and addresses student attendance concerns, including identifying patterns of absenteeism and working with families to improve attendance. Maintains accurate records and ensures compliance with district and state attendance policies. (E)
  1. May assist in the implementation of the curriculum and monitoring classroom instruction to ensure that the District Curriculum is delivered to all students. (E)
  1. May participate in screening process for students with special needs and assists with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). (E)
  1. Assists the Building Principal and Assistant Building Principal in developing and managing a budget for the school.
  1. Implements policies and practices of the District. (E)
  1. Assists in the responsibilities for the successful induction of new staff members. (E)
  1. Administers appropriate provisions of negotiated contracts with employee groups and organizations providing services to the schools. (E)
  1. Completes reports as required by school and/or central office personnel in fulfillment of federal, state, and local needs. (E)
  1. Is able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds and as necessary. (E)
  1. Is able to speak and write in a clear, concise manner. (E)
  1. Provides his/her own transportation to attend meetings (called by central office), approved seminar/conferences, and/or assigned District committees. (E)
  1. Assists in the supervision of ordering, inventory, and distribution of instructional and non-instructional supplies and materials.
  1. Assists the Building Principal and Assistant Principal in the fiscal management of curricular areas.
  1. Is able to maintain a flexible schedule, including participation in school events outside of regular school hours. (E)
  1. Participates in legal proceedings as they relate to the welfare of the students. (E)
  1. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee.

 

Physical Requirements:

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

 

This position may involve the controlling of others—seizing, holding, controlling and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive or physically threatening persons to defend self or prevent injury.  Body strength and agility of all four limbs is required.

 

Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.

 

Equipment Used:

Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, etc.
