Histology Laboratory Assistant - Overnight Shift

About the Role

Analyze Pathology is seeking a highly dependable, detail-oriented individual to join our histology laboratory team on overnight shift.

This position will focus heavily on embedding and microtomy (tissue sectioning). Previous histology experience is strongly valued, but we are willing to train the right person. We're looking for someone who learns quickly, works carefully, takes ownership of their work, and can develop into an employee we trust to work independently.

Microtomy is precise, hands-on technical work. Small details matter. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys mastering a skill, notices when something doesn't look right, and takes pride in producing consistently high-quality work.

You do not need to know everything on your first day. You do need to be someone who can learn a detailed process, retain what you've been taught, apply feedback, and become increasingly independent as your competency develops.

What You'll Do

The primary responsibilities of this position will be:

• Embedding tissue specimens in paraffin, with careful attention to tissue orientation, specimen integrity, and prevention of cross-contamination
• Performing microtomy, producing consistent, high-quality tissue sections for staining and pathologist review
• Learning proper tissue orientation and sectioning techniques to preserve diagnostic architecture and minimize artifact
• Loading slides onto the Leica Bond and other laboratory instrumentation according to established procedures
• Verifying specimen, block, and slide identification throughout the workflow
• Recognizing quality issues, troubleshooting within your training and competency, and escalating concerns appropriately
• Maintaining microtomes, embedding equipment, instrumentation, and work areas
• Performing slide and block filing and other laboratory support tasks between primary production responsibilities
• Maintaining accurate documentation and following laboratory SOPs, safety requirements, and quality standards

Experience & Qualifications

Previous histology or microtomy experience is preferred but not required.

We are interested in candidates with backgrounds such as:

• Histology or pathology laboratories
• Clinical or medical laboratories
• Science-related education
• Healthcare
• Quality control
• Technical manufacturing or other precision-based environments

Candidates without direct histology experience will be considered if they demonstrate strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to learn quickly.

Additional requirements include:

• Strong computer and data-entry skills
• Ability to follow detailed written procedures
• Ability to maintain accurate documentation
• Ability to stand for extended periods
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Training

We will train the right candidate.

New employees will receive hands-on training alongside experienced day-shift laboratory staff, with significant emphasis on embedding and microtomy.

Because these skills require hands-on instruction and demonstrated competency, candidates must have schedule flexibility during the initial training period. Training hours may shift between schedules as needed to ensure adequate time with experienced staff.

Once training and competency requirements have been successfully completed, the employee will transition to the permanent overnight schedule.

We do not expect an inexperienced employee to perform technical laboratory work independently before they are ready. We do expect the successful candidate to progressively build independence as training and competency are completed.

Schedule

Permanent Schedule:
Monday-Friday
11:00 PM-7:00 AM

Training Schedule:
Day-shift and/or adjusted hours during the initial training period. Candidates must be able to accommodate temporary schedule changes while completing hands-on training.

Compensation

$26.45-$29.90 per hour while working the overnight schedule

Compensation consists of a base hourly rate of $23.00-$26.00, based on relevant experience, education, and qualifications, plus a 15% overnight shift differential.

Laboratory Assistant III is the highest level of our Laboratory Assistant career ladder, and employees interested in continued advancement are encouraged to pursue HT certification and advancement into a Histotechnician role.
