Cytotechnologist

Analyze Pathology, Inc.
Knoxville, TN Full Time
POSTED ON 7/26/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/22/2026

Help Build the Future of Cytology

Analyze Pathology is a rapidly growing independent anatomic pathology laboratory expanding its Women's Health services by bringing cervical cytology testing in-house. We are seeking an experienced Cytotechnologist who is excited by the opportunity to help build a modern, high-quality cytology department from the ground up.

This is more than a traditional screening position. In addition to primary Pap test screening, you will play an important role in developing workflows, supporting quality and regulatory compliance, assisting with standard operating procedures, and helping establish best practices as our cytology service continues to grow.

What Makes This Position Different

Analyze Pathology is building its in-house cytology department from the ground up. If we hire early enough in the implementation process, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to participate in the department's buildout, including providing input on equipment selection, workflow design, and operational processes.

Because the department is new, the early months of this role will include facility and personnel licensure steps, workflow validation, and inspection readiness alongside, and in some cases ahead of, hands-on slide screening. Patient-reportable screening will begin once the laboratory's cytology specialty is fully licensed and certified. See "How This Role Fits Our Regulatory Structure" below.

Your experience and ideas will be valued as we create a modern, efficient cytology laboratory designed to support our continued growth.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate primary screening of ThinPrep® Pap tests in accordance with CLIA requirements and laboratory policies, within CLIA-mandated workload limits.
  • Identify and appropriately refer abnormal cases to the pathologist.
  • Maintain accurate, CLIA-compliant workload documentation, including hours spent screening and slide counts, to support required workload reassessments.
  • Participate in cytology quality assurance activities, including mandatory rescreening requirements and cytology-histology correlation.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with CLIA, Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board regulations, and, where applicable, COLA accreditation standards governing the cytology laboratory.
  • Help prepare the laboratory for COLA or state inspections by maintaining organized documentation, quality records, and inspection readiness.
  • Review and maintain quality documentation and monthly quality metrics.
  • Assist with the development, review, and revision of standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director/Cytology General Supervisor and laboratory leadership to improve workflows and operational efficiency.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to cytology preparation staff as needed, under the oversight of the Medical Director acting as Cytology General Supervisor.
  • Participate in the implementation of new equipment, technology, and workflow improvements as the department expands.
  • Maintain continuing education and professional competency requirements.

Qualifications

Required

  • CT(ASCP) certification or equivalent qualifying certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology or a related laboratory science.
  • Current Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board license as a Cytotechnologist, or eligibility to obtain one prior to independently screening patient specimens. Candidates without an active Tennessee license may be considered if eligible to work under a Board-approved trainee permit while licensure is pending.
  • Experience screening gynecologic cytology specimens.
  • Working knowledge of CLIA requirements, Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board regulations, and cytology quality assurance practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the Medical Director and laboratory leadership.

Preferred

  • Three or more years of cytology experience.
  • Experience in a high-volume cytology laboratory.
  • Experience supporting laboratory regulatory compliance and preparing for COLA or state inspections.
  • Experience developing or revising laboratory procedures and documentation.
  • Interest in laboratory process improvement and workflow development.
  • Experience participating in the implementation of new laboratory technology or services, including new department launches.

How This Role Fits Our Regulatory Structure

Our Medical Director, a board-certified anatomic pathologist, serves as the laboratory's Cytology General Supervisor under CLIA and Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board rules. This position reports directly to the Medical Director and does not carry supervisory licensure responsibilities.

The cytology specialty is being added to our existing Tennessee laboratory license and CLIA certificate. Independent screening and reporting of patient results will begin once the laboratory's specialty addition, CLIA certificate amendment, and, if applicable, COLA survey are complete.

All cytotechnologists must hold, or be actively pursuing, individual Tennessee licensure in addition to national certification. Analyze Pathology will support qualified candidates through the Tennessee licensure process.
