CNC ID/OD Metal Machining Line Operator

You’ll run and care for a CNC machining line that shapes metal workpieces to exacting ID and OD specifications. Every shift, you transform raw parts into precision components that meet customer expectations and Amsted Rail standards.

You arrive, suit up with PPE, and complete safety checks. You load or position components (manually or with hoists/cranes), call up the right CNC program, and verify the first-piece dimensions with gauges against the departmental quality plan. As the line runs, you monitor transfer conveyors, listen for telltale changes like vibration or dull tooling, and make manual or automatic adjustments to keep parts in spec. You record production data in the company system, move finished bins via forklift to internal customers, perform light PM, and partner with Setup personnel for quick changeovers. Before wrap-up, you double-check work for defects and prep the cell for the next run.

• Operate and maintain a CNC machining line performing multiple ID/OD operations on metal parts
• Measure finished dimensions with gauges to ensure conformance to specifications per the departmental quality plan
• Inspect in-process and finished work for defects
• Assist Setup with changeovers, attachments, and workholding across lines/cells
• Safely select and use hand and power tools
• Lift/position machine components manually or with hoists/cranes
• Monitor transfer conveyors for proper operation
• Listen for issues (e.g., dull cutting tools, excessive vibration) and correct promptly
• Adjust machine parameters via manual or automatic controls; correct out-of-conformance conditions
• Record production run details in the company computer system
• Understand operational sequences and target dimensions
• Operate a forklift to stage and move bins for internal customers
• Other duties as requested

• Select and load CNC programs into machine control units
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks on equipment
• Troubleshoot part compliance issues and equipment problems
• Verify alignment using measurement instructions, tools, and gauges; confirm final dimensions meet spec
• Adjust tooling, cutting tools, and machine controls as needed
• Perform machine and robotic/transfer conveyor set-ups

• Ability to lift, push, and pull 10–50 lbs
• Comfort standing and moving throughout the department and shift
• Readiness to wear employer-provided PPE
• Mechanical aptitude; prior industrial experience is a plus
• Forklift experience helpful (can train)
