Job Summary
The General Manager (GM) of the Plumbing Division is a strategic and operational leader responsible for driving performance, profitability, safety, and quality within a large-scale plumbing business unit. This role oversees field operations, project execution, workforce planning, financial management, and customer relationships. The GM ensures projects are delivered on time and within budget while developing strong leadership capabilities, scalable processes, and a high-performing workforce for long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities Include: (But not limited to the following)
Operational Leadership
- Provide full P&L oversight for the Plumbing Division, ensuring achievement of revenue, margin, productivity, and efficiency targets.
- Lead day-to-day operations including field labor, project management, procurement, scheduling, and service activities.
- Ensure adherence to project timelines, safety standards, installation quality, and customer expectations.
- Drive operational excellence by implementing best practices, standard operating procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Strategic Planning & Growth
- Develop and execute a multi-year business strategy that aligns with organizational goals for growth, profitability, and market share expansion.
- Identify new business opportunities, service lines, and market segments within plumbing construction and service.
- Collaborate closely with executive leadership on forecasting, capital planning, risk management, and resource allocation.
Financial Management
- Manage divisional budgets, financial reporting, cost controls, forecasting, and performance analysis.
- Track key financial indicators including labor utilization, job costing, backlog, and gross margin.
- Partner with Finance and Operations to ensure accurate billing, cost capture, and compliance with corporate financial standards.
Workforce Management & Development
- Oversee recruitment, retention, staffing levels, and talent pipeline for laborers, apprentices, journeymen, foremen, and superintendents.
- Coach and develop operational and project management leaders to ensure strong leadership bench strength.
- Drive training, safety programs, skill development, and workforce progression pathways.
- Promote a positive, accountable, and performance-driven culture.
Client & Stakeholder Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, project owners, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction through responsiveness, quality execution, and proactive communication.
- Represent the Plumbing Division in executive meetings, strategic planning sessions, and cross-functional initiatives.
Safety & Compliance
- Uphold strict compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA and company safety standards.
- Champion a culture of safety across all project sites and operations.
- Implement audits, corrective action plans, and risk-mitigation practices.
Qualifications
Required
- 10 years of progressive leadership experience in plumbing construction, mechanical contracting, or industrial/commercial trade operations.
- Proven success leading large field teams (200 employees) and managing multi-million-dollar projects.
- Strong financial acumen with demonstrated P&L leadership experience.
- Expertise in workforce planning, project management, and operational execution.
- Deep understanding of plumbing codes, installation methods, materials, and trade best practices.
Preferred
- Experience within a large specialty contractor (plumbing, mechanical, electrical) of similar scale (1,000 employees, $100MM revenue).
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
- Experience implementing process improvements, technology systems, or operational transformations.
- Strong relationships within the Northern California construction market.
