Position Summary
The Marine Insulator / Lagger installs, removes, and repairs insulation and lagging on piping systems, ventilation, machinery, and structural components aboard U.S. Navy surface ships, submarines, and shore facilities.
Work is performed in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-11, applicable contract specifications, and OSHA 29 CFR 1915 requirements for shipyard employment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Remove, install, and repair high-temperature, acoustical, anti-sweat, and foam-plastic insulation on piping, fittings, valves, bulkheads, tanks, and machinery.
- Install and secure insulation using wiring, adhesives, strapping, or mechanical fasteners in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-11 and shop drawings.
- Cut, fit, and shape insulation materials to complex geometries using templates, knives, shears, or saws.
- Fabricate and apply finishing systems such as fiberglass cloth, calcium-silicate block, finishing cement, or molded sections.
- Install or remove portable insulation pads and reusable lagging covers as required.
- Apply vapor barriers, coatings, or adhesives consistent with temperature and moisture requirements.
- Perform cleanup and waste segregation of insulation materials in compliance with environmental and hazardous-material handling requirements.
- Set up and maintain safe work areas, fall-protection, ventilation, and containment systems.
- Ensure all insulation work meets dimensional, appearance, and material-specification requirements.
- Support other preservation and mechanical trades as directed by supervision.
- Participates in daily pre-job briefs, toolbox talks, and post-job reviews with AMP United and NNSY Supervisors.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of shipboard insulation systems, including high-temperature, cryogenic, sound, and condensation-control applications.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-769, NAVSEA Standard Item 009-11, and typical shipyard work instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and templates.
- Knowledge of safe removal, disposal, and replacement procedures for materials containing asbestos, lead, or other regulated substances.
- Proficient in use of hand and power tools for cutting, shaping, and fastening insulation materials.
- Understanding of shipboard compartmentation, access controls, and confined-space requirements.
- Ability to identify insulation materials by type, thickness, and temperature range.
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship under minimal supervision.
Training and Certification Requirements
Marine Insulator / Lagger personnel must complete and maintain the following prior to assignment:
- Hazard Communication
- Respiratory Protection
- Asbestos Awareness
- Lead and Chromium (VI) Awareness
- Confined / Enclosed Space Entry
- Fall Protection
- Fire Watch / Tank Watch
- Shipyard Mandatory Annual Training
- First Aid / CPR certification
Security and Access Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass all background, drug, and security checks.
- Must possess or obtain a Secret Clearance.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a formal insulation or lagging apprenticeship, technical trade program, or equivalent shipyard training preferred.
- Minimum four (4) years verifiable industrial or shipyard insulation experience, including at least two (2) years aboard U.S. Navy vessels.
- Experience with insulation materials such as fiberglass, mineral wool, calcium silicate, and removable pads required.
- Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-11 and environmental compliance procedures preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and handle insulation materials, tools, and equipment for extended periods.
- Prolonged standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing in confined or elevated shipboard spaces.
- Tolerance for working in hot, noisy, or ventilated areas wearing PPE.
- Must wear all required PPE (hard hat, safety shoes, respirator, gloves, FR clothing, eye/ear protection, and fall protection gear).
- Must maintain fitness for duty and respirator qualification.
