The General Counsel is responsible for translating the company’s vision into actionable legal strategies that support and protect the interests of the company and its portfolio businesses. This is a hands-on role requiring exceptional critical thinking about legal and operational challenges, coupled with the ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations. We are seeking someone with a proven track record across multiple areas of law, including corporate governance, manufacturing law, distribution agreements, and labor law, while providing legal guidance and risk mitigation strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic counsel on corporate governance, compliance, enterprise risk, litigation, M&A, financing, labor and employment, intellectual property, data privacy, and regulatory issues across all entities and operating businesses.
- Ensure legal perspectives are embedded in strategic planning, operations, and decision-making.
- Collaborate across functions—including Finance, HR, IT, Quality and Compliance, and Global Trade—to ensure comprehensive risk and legal coverage.
- Manage litigation, disputes, and investigations to protect the company’s assets, brand, and reputation.
- Create and oversee policies and practices to safeguard intellectual property, trade, cybersecurity, and data privacy.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements, including partnership agreements, vendor contracts, supplier contracts, service agreements, employment contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and non-compete clauses.
- Partner with external legal counsel as necessary and represent the company in legal proceedings.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and implement measures to safeguard the company’s interests.
- Serve as legal support on employment law matters, including employee relations, labor disputes, and compliance with employment regulations.
- Champion company values and culture by embedding integrity, compliance, and transparency into daily operations.
- Foster a culture of legal awareness across the organization through training and policy development.
- Stay abreast of legal trends in manufacturing, consumer goods, and wellness sectors to proactively support business growth.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in New York State
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive legal experience, with at least 5 years in a senior in-house counsel role, in manufacturing, consumer products, or a related industry
- Proven track record as a General Counsel or senior legal executive, preferably within a private holding company or similar environment
- Extensive knowledge of corporate, commercial, and regulatory law
- Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strategic thinker with pragmatic business judgment and strong risk management instinct
- High ethical standards and professional integrity
- Collaborative “business partner” mentality with a low-ego, team-oriented approach
Annual salary starting at $300,000.
