Ames CSD is seeking a .60 FTE Elementary Orchestra Teacher for the 2026-27 school year. This position is a shared position between elementary buildings.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Plans a balanced orchestra program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides a variety of planned learning experiences using a variety of instructional techniques in order to motivate students and best utilize time for instruction.
- Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
- Evaluates each student's musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute.
- Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students.
- Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment.
- Effectively meets the academic and social needs of each student through differentiated practices.
- Establishes a system of student evaluation within guidelines prescribed by the District.
- Is available for counseling with students and parents during preparation periods as well as before and after school.
- Participates in the development and revision of course outlines for classes taught. This shall include goals and performance objectives for students, course content and learning activities, evaluative procedures, and instructional materials.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with building and District staff.
- Engages in faculty meetings and committees.
- Follows and abides by District policies.
- Attends school and District meetings.
- Performs supervision as needed.
- Seeks to improve competency by participating in personal and professional growth activities in conjunction with building and District goals.
- Participates cooperatively with the building Principal to develop a system by which they will be evaluated in conformance with the District's guidelines for evaluations and assessment.
- Assumes the responsibility for written lesson plans and substitutes.
Qualifications:
- Valid Iowa teaching license required.
- K-8 Music/Band endorsement required.
- Prior success teaching string orchestra, symphonic orchestra, and chamber groups preferred.
The successful candidate will exhibit:
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to create a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for all students and staff.
