What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer – Sheet Metal Design, CNC Programming & Engineering Standards position at Ameritex Machine & Fabrication?
About Ameritex
Ameritex is a fast-growing metal fabrication company specializing in generator enclosures, industrial electrical enclosures, structural weldments, and turnkey fabricated assemblies. We serve customers in power generation, infrastructure, oil & gas, renewable energy, and industrial markets. We pride ourselves on speed, quality, manufacturability, and innovation.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with strong sheet-metal design experience to own the full engineering lifecycle—from 3D model → flat pattern → CNC programming → ERP release. This role works closely with production, programming, and project management to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and delivered with consistency.
Beyond modeling and programming, this position plays a key role in developing engineering standards, workflows, and process improvements that reduce rework and increase throughput across the business.
Responsibilities:
Design & Modeling
- Create 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks (Sheet Metal Weldments)
- Design generator enclosures, sound-attenuated housings, electrical enclosures (VFD, PLC, MCC, switchgear), structural skids, frames, weldments, and custom assemblies
- Apply DFM principles to ensure designs are practical, repeatable, and cost-effective
Programming & Flat Patterns
- Generate accurate flat patterns, bend deductions, and forming information
- Program parts for lasers, punches, tube lasers, and press brakes using CADMAN Suite and Artube
- Produce clear fabrication drawings, weld details, hardware callouts, and bend notes
ERP Data Ownership
- Enter and maintain BOMs, routings, part metadata, and revision control inside Fulcrum ERP
- Ensure engineering data is clean, structured, and fully ready for release to manufacturing
- Work within SolidWorks PDM to manage files, revisions, workflows, and approvals
Engineering Standards, Workflows & Process Improvement (ENGINEER-LEVEL OWNERSHIP)
- Develop and maintain Ameritex engineering standards, templates, and modeling practices
- Improve engineering workflows, documentation, and handoffs to reduce errors and rework
- Create and govern standards for bend rules, hardware specs, nesting guidelines, part numbering, revision structure, etc.
- Identify bottlenecks in design → programming → fabrication and lead technical improvement initiatives
- Collaborate cross-functionally to improve manufacturability and reduce variation across jobs
Production Support
- Work directly with welders, brake operators, laser operators, and assembly teams to resolve technical issues
- Troubleshoot fabrication, forming, welding, or assembly challenges
- Support overtime or after-hours work when critical project deadlines require it
Required Qualifications
- 3 years mechanical design experience with sheet-metal enclosures or structural weldments
- Strong SolidWorks skills (Sheet Metal & Weldments required)
- Understanding of fabrication processes: laser cutting, press braking, welding, hardware, assembly
- Experience with programming or willingness to learn laser/press-brake programming immediately
- ERP experience (BOMs, routings, part structure, revisions)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a DFM-first mindset
Preferred Experience
- SolidWorks PDM (files, revisions, workflows)
- Industrial/electrical enclosure design (NEMA, UL, NEC familiarity)
- Experience in a fabrication or job-shop environment
- Knowledge of PEM hardware, gasketing, ventilation, sound attenuation, or cooling solutions
Soft Skills / Culture Fit
- Organized, detail-driven, and accountable
- Strong communicator who collaborates well with production
- Proactive problem solver — not a “minimum effort” engineer
- Willing to stay late or work overtime when critical projects require it
- Driven to improve processes, not just complete tasks
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary ($75,000–$100,000)
- Bonus potential
- Health benefits, PTO, paid holidays
- 401(k) available
- Significant career growth in a rapidly scaling engineering environment
- Opportunity to help shape the future engineering standards and workflows at Ameritex
Salary : $75,000 - $100,000
