Job Description: On-call Amtrak Route Driver
Reports To: Contract Operations Manager
Location: Emeryville / Hayward / Santa Rosa, CA. *Must be able to commute to all starting locations*
Position Summary
An on-call driving position that provides flexible operational coverage across AmericanStar Tours service in the NorCal region. The primary function of this role is to serve as a reliable, available driver for call-out coverage on Amtrak Thruway Routes 7, 99, and 40. This role requires flexibility, a strong driving record, and the ability to operate professionally across multiple locations and route types.
Key Responsibilities
On-Call Driving Coverage
- Serve as primary on-call driver for NorCal routes, covering unplanned absences and staffing gaps on Amtrak Thruway Routes 7, 99, and 40 as dispatched.
- Report for duty on short notice as required; availability during early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays is essential to this role.
- Operate revenue service vehicles in full compliance with Amtrak Thruway Standards of Service, DOT hours-of-service regulations, and AST company policies.
- Complete thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections for every assignment and report any defects to dispatch and the maintenance team promptly.
- Provide professional passenger service throughout each run, handling inquiries and boarding procedures in accordance with Amtrak and AST standards.
- Support extra service runs during peak periods, including spring break, holidays, and event-driven demand as assigned.
Compliance & Safety
- Operate all vehicles in compliance with FMCSA hours-of-service regulations and California CHP requirements at all times.
- Maintain current CDL, DOT Medical Certificate, and all required endorsements throughout employment.
- Report accidents, incidents, or near-misses immediately to dispatch and the Contract Operations Manager, following established protocols.
- Adhere to all DOT drug and alcohol program requirements, including post-accident testing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement required.
- Current DOT Medical Certificate.
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating motorcoaches, transit vehicles, or commercial passenger vehicles.
- Demonstrated ability to operate on short notice and maintain flexibility in scheduling across varying shift times and locations.
- Strong working knowledge of FMCSA hours-of-service regulations and DOT compliance requirements.
- Ability to work varied hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
- Professional communication skills; ability to interact with passengers, dispatch, and maintenance staff effectively.
- Valid California driver’s license and clean DMV record.
Pay: $38.00 per hour
