Job Title: Lead, Environmental, Health & Safety Program Posting Start Date: 12/19/25 Job Description: Position Information ***This position can be filled in any location in American Water's footprint Posted Range: $83,550 - $119,430 The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. Primary Role Manage and support the environmental, health, and safety programs at all MSG locations, supporting project operations, maintenance and capital staff. Responsible for ensuring environmental compliance by following all company, state, and federal requirements and regulations. Maintaining all health & safety programs, processes, and procedures at the location to ensure everyone’s safety as well as compliance. Main point of contact (POC) concerning staff, regulators, inspectors, and auditors regarding all EH&S programs, processes, and procedures. Support local staff with training on all EH&S materials for employees, visitors, and contractors. Key Accountabilities Contribute to the development of AW environmental compliance policies, procedures and practices. Monitor future environmental compliance regulations and changes, and ensure the company is prepared to comply. Management and oversight over the dual validation process as it relates to sample collection and sample reporting. This includes knowledge of the water and/or wastewater system for all MSG locations, holding meetings to ensure the process is being followed and corrective action taken when necessary. Interactions with local, state & federal agencies. This includes involvement with regulatory site visits for all MSG locations. Review environmental reports to the appropriate regulatory agencies, i.e. Tier reporting, Audit finding updates, Spill Reports, SWPPP, SPCC Plan, etc. Health & Safety: Implement, document, and provide training on the Company’s Health and Safety Policies as well as any applicable OSHA requirements. Manage auditing and ensuring compliance with facilities, enter work orders into the CMMS, as well as all site H&S plans. Observe, document, train and provide feedback to MSG staff and third-party vendors as well as contractors performing work. Lead all EH&S incidents and accidents analysis and corrective /preventative measures. Support each base with task trackers for program improvements and lessons learned. Routinely perform in-person and virtual audits in EH&S areas of maintenance, water, and wastewater facilities for regulatory and company policy compliance, prepare audit findings and ensure closure/corrective actions. Assist in the preparation of all permit applications, preparation of regulatory reports, provide monthly EH&S and Compliance reporting. Provide support, sample validation reports, Lab QA/QC documentation, and interact/reporting (as necessary) with regulatory agencies (approved by manager). Provide support to all MSG locations with DOT Compliance including random DOT drug and alcohol testing. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge/Skills Extensive knowledge related to management and compliance of water and wastewater systems and processes. Broad working knowledge of Federal Clean Water Act, NPDES requirements, Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act, FAR requirements, OSHA, and other federal, state, and local regulations that affect MSG and/or CSG project operations. Broad working knowledge of all state specific environmental regulations and requirements for states in which the company operates. Broad working knowledge of all Federal OSHA regulations and requirements applicable for the location. Knowledge of company procedures, policies, and operations. Knowledge of quality control systems and compliance standards. Ability to develop EH&S compliance programs and systems and explain and teach such systems to others. Ability to develop and describe a long-term vision for the company’s EH&S compliance activities. Ability to influence others and build relationships with employees across diverse groups within not only the location, but supporting the EH&S team within MSG. Proactively and effectively drive change at each facility to address emerging EH&S issues and promote continuous improvement. Encourage the effective use of technology to improve facility operations and maintenance as well as capital improvement projects. Institutionalizes the concepts of continuous quality improvement activities, performance measures and benchmarking. Can clearly articulate complex issues both verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical people. Ability to plan and present environmental compliance and O&M training to employees. Ability to interact with colleagues, direct reports, governmental agencies, consultants, contractors, and the public. Computer literacy. Competent in the use of word processing and spreadsheet programs, computerized maintenance management systems and computerized process control software. Public speaking relative to teaching EH&S subjects a must. Experience/Education Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Water/Wastewater industry. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in water and wastewater industry compliance for Environmental, Health and Safety programs. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the oversight and administration of quality compliance and control programs in the water/wastewater industry. Industry related EH&S certifications, water and/or wastewater license an advantage. High School Diploma or GED required. Degree in sanitary, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering, chemistry, biology or environmental science, business administration, health & safety or another related field preferred. Additional qualifying experience or training may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis. Travel Requirements Up to 75% Work Environment 60% field; 40% office. In addition to American Water’s pre-employment screenings, this position requires the ability to pass a Department of Defense background check for access to military installations. Other Having an in-depth working knowledge of Hach-WIMS or a similar laboratory information management software program is preferred.
