Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a high-volume, fast-paced Labor & Delivery position requiring a minimum of 2 years of L&D experience and a background in facilities delivering over 300 births per month.
Details
- Labor & Delivery unit in a high-acuity hospital setting with an attached obstetrical triage unit
- Patient population includes obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for intrapartum, high-risk antepartum, and postpartum care, as well as high-risk patients under 16 weeks on the high-risk maternity unit
- Unit volume averages over 300 births per month, approximately 20 births per 24-hour period, 30–40 admissions, and 40 visits per day
- Patient ratio is 2:1; double labor assignments occur daily
- Unit consists of 20 rooms
- Procedures performed include scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births, rescue cervical cerclage, antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, and medication administration
- EMR: Epic (required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework
- Day shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 06:45–19:15
- Every other weekend required, with a minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- No on-call requirement
- Floating required as needed within or near the facility, including to the Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit
- Contracts of 13–26 weeks are accepted
Requirements
- Active NC or Compact RN license (may be pending at time of consideration)
- Current certifications required: BLS and NRP; AWHONN Intermediate required (AWHONN Advanced preferred; C-EFM accepted in lieu of AWHONN)
- Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required; 3 years preferred
- Experience in a high-volume facility delivering more than 300 births per month required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Required skills: circulating for C-sections, sterile vaginal exams, and immediate newborn care
- Additional skills expected: obstetrical triage, antepartum care, OCT, cardiac monitoring and emergency care, infant/neonatal arrest response, dysrhythmia interpretation, pain assessment and management, and IV therapy/phlebotomy
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
Additional Information
- This is an extremely fast-paced, high-acuity unit — nurses should be prepared for a more demanding environment than typical L&D settings
- Orientation is 24 hours, conducted on a weekly schedule
- Pre-start online modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles) and must be completed annually thereafter
- Blue scrubs are provided by the facility
- Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved, excluding holidays; no RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment, and no additional RTO can be requested after signing
- First-time travelers are accepted, provided they have experience in a large, high-volume L&D setting
- Former permanent, PRN, or extended placement staff of the associated health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler, and prior employment must be disclosed with dates
- Local candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are welcome to apply
- Travel pairs are permitted but must be assigned to different units and have their own transportation
