Payroll Manager
Position Summary
The Payroll Manager oversees all aspects of payroll operations to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time. This role manages two payroll staff, maintains compliance with wage-and-hour regulations, and partners with HR, Finance, and IT to improve payroll processes and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end payroll processing for all pay groups, including hourly, salary, bonus, and commission payments.
- Ensure accuracy of wage calculations, tax withholdings, benefits deductions, and garnishments.
- Supervise payroll staff and provide coaching, training, and performance feedback.
- Monitor UKG tax-filing services for accuracy and timeliness; assist staff accountant in reconciling tax liabilities and resolve discrepancies with UKG or taxing authorities when needed.
- Oversee payroll system configuration, audits, and upgrades; coordinate with HRIS and accounting teams on integrations.
- Reconcile payroll accounts, prepare journal entries, and support month-end and year-end close.
- Partner with HR and Finance on budgeting, reporting, and employee compensation changes.
- Respond promptly to employee questions and resolve payroll issues professionally.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and data security.
Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs)
- Interpret and apply wage, benefit, overtime, and premium rules from union contracts to payroll calculations.
- Maintain schedules, rate tables, and accrual rules in alignment with CBAs.
- Work closely with HR, operations, and union representatives to clarify contract language affecting pay.
- Track contract changes, ensuring payroll practices and system configurations reflect current agreements.
- Support audits and grievance responses related to pay provisions under CBAs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5 years of payroll experience, including multi-state payroll; 2 years in a supervisory capacity preferred.
- Solid knowledge of payroll law and tax regulations, with experience monitoring third-party tax services.
- Experience processing payroll under one or more CBAs, including complex overtime and shift-differential rules.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and discretion with confidential data.
- Proficient in performing analysis in spreadsheets.
- Hands-on experience with UKG or similar payroll/HRIS platforms and ERP integrations a plus.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) credential a plus.
