Position Summary
The Southwestern Research Station (SWRS), located in the rural community of Portal, Arizona, is a non-profit biological field station owned by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. We have been in operation since 1955. Our primary mission is to encourage and support biological research and conservation. We host researchers, students, workshop, courses, and naturalists from around the world. Primarily, we provide room and board, laboratory space, technical equipment, and support facilities for those studying the extraordinary biodiversity of the Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding environments.

The SWRS is seeking a part-time Research Project Assistant to support a 5-year seasonal research project involving the life cycle of frogs. This project is in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Ladder - A Ted Turner Reserve, The Allen Family Foundation, and Ball State University.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare frog larvae tanks and caged ponds, water, filters, etc.
  • House frogs.
  • Feed larvae and frogs.
  • Monitor and note the health of the water, eggs, larvae, and frogs.
  • Take daily notes capturing the day and numbers of eggs, larvae, and frogs.
  • Swab frogs to test for chytrid fungus.
  • Send eggs to partners at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The expected salary for the Research Project Assistant is $20.00/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Experience handling amphibians and amphibian habitats
  • Willingness to live onsite at the Southwestern Research Station in Portal, AZ

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the SWRS campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:
      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
