Role Overview
This is not a narrow backend role. You'll be building across classical backend systems and a frontier product area: reliable computer use in enterprise workflows.
The work spans APIs, infrastructure, automation, and AI-adjacent systems, with significant opportunities for ownership. You'll be joining during a period of rapid growth at a well-capitalized startup led by an experienced, second-time, exited founding team.
What You'll Do
- Build backend services, APIs, and data integrations, including data modeling and schema design.
- Develop infrastructure for AI-powered computer-use workflows, including orchestration, state management, and recovery.
- Improve observability, alerting, debugging, and production hardening.
- Own engineering relationships and feedback loops with customers.
- Build product features spanning deterministic code, browser automation, and model-driven execution.
Key Pain Points & Challenges
- Current models struggle with reliability when executing end-to-end workflows. The team is looking for engineers who can improve this.
- Seeking candidates who can tackle complex technical challenges and contribute to the company's rapid growth.
Work Experience
- Has shipped production-grade code in a full-time engineering role.
- Experience working at a high-growth startup or a top technology company.
- Experience in a customer-facing or forward-deployed engineering role.
Education
- Undergraduate degree from Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), or Caltech. Open to candidates from a number of companies.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong engineering fundamentals with demonstrated proficiency in Python.
- Experience productionizing machine learning models or building ML infrastructure.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work onsite in San Francisco, CA, five days per week.
- This is not a traditional 9-to-5 role.
