What You'll Do
This full-time, permanent position is within a manufacturing environment specializing in the production of charitable and lottery gaming products, including pull-tab (break-open) tickets and bingo paper. The Offset Press Apprentice will work closely with the Press Operator to ensure the efficient operation, maintenance, and upkeep of offset printing presses. This role offers hands-on experience with press operation, material handling, and machine maintenance, providing an excellent opportunity for advancement in the printing industry.
The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience in a manufacturing or printing environment, preferably with exposure to offset printing presses or similar industrial machinery. They should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on production equipment and a keen eye for quality control and attention to detail. Experience with material handling, press setup, ink management, and machine lubrication is highly desirable. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate proficiency in following written and verbal instructions, basic math skills for measurements and calculations and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Press Operation Support:
- Assist in setting up and operating offset printing presses, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to production specifications.
- Monitor press operation, making minor adjustments as needed to maintain print quality, color consistency, and registration alignment.
- Assist in the loading and unloading of paper rolls or sheets into the feeder system, ensuring smooth operation and minimizing downtime.
- Support the Press Operator with plate changes, blanket installation, roller adjustments, and make-ready tasks.
- Help maintain proper ink levels, dampening solution balance, and lubrication of press components for optimal performance.
- Conduct routine press checks to identify and troubleshoot potential mechanical issues, ensuring smooth workflow.
- Assist in performing press wash-ups and color changes to prevent contamination between print runs.
- Follow established procedures for press shutdown and restart to minimize material waste and downtime.
Material Handling & Workflow Efficiency:
- Prepare and organize skids of paper for loading into the feeder, ensuring proper alignment and stacking for continuous operation.
- Assist with roll changes and material transfers to ensure uninterrupted production.
- Ensure correct ink, coatings, and substrates are used according to job ticket specifications.
- Handle printed materials with care to avoid damage and maintain product quality.
Maintenance & Housekeeping:
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly press maintenance tasks as outlined in standard operating procedures.
- Regularly clean rollers, blankets, and ink fountains to maintain print quality and prevent downtime.
- Monitor and maintain proper oil levels, lubrication points, and general machine upkeep.
- Keep workstations clean and organized, adhering to 5S or other lean manufacturing principles.
- Adhere to all workplace safety standards, reporting potential hazards or maintenance issues as needed.
Professional Development & Team Collaboration:
- Proactively learn all aspects of press operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance to prepare for advancement.
- Work collaboratively with press operators, supervisors, and other team members to meet production goals.
- Follow detailed job ticket instructions and communicate effectively regarding any discrepancies or concerns.
- Participate in ongoing training to improve technical skills and operational efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 to 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in printing or press operation.
- Prior experience with offset printing, flexographic printing, or related machinery is a plus.
Technical & Operational Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret job tickets, work orders, and technical instructions.
- Understanding of offset press mechanics, ink properties, and paper handling.
- Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills with a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
- Moderate to advanced computer skills for data entry, production tracking, and troubleshooting press software.
- Ability to follow established procedures for press setup, operation, and maintenance.
