American Consultants is looking for interim Director of Laboratory Services for a facility in Minnesota.
Position Summary
The Interim Laboratory Director provides temporary leadership and operational oversight for the hospital’s clinical laboratory services. This role ensures regulatory compliance, maintains high-quality patient testing standards, stabilizes operations during leadership transitions, and supports staff performance and engagement.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Operations
- Provide day-to-day leadership for all laboratory departments (e.g., hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, pathology support)
- Ensure efficient workflow, staffing coverage, and turnaround times
- Assess current operations and implement process improvements as needed
- Collaborate with hospital leadership on strategic and operational priorities
Regulatory Compliance & Quality
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, state regulations)
- Maintain readiness for inspections and accreditation surveys
- Oversee quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programs
- Investigate and resolve compliance or quality issues
Staff Management
- Supervise laboratory managers, supervisors, and technical staff
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance oversight
- Address staffing gaps, scheduling, and workforce challenges
- Support recruitment or onboarding if needed during the interim period
Financial Oversight
- Monitor departmental budget, expenses, and resource utilization
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality
- Assist with vendor management, contracts, and supply chain coordination
Clinical & Physician Collaboration
- Work closely with pathologists, physicians, and nursing leadership
- Ensure laboratory services meet clinical needs and support patient care
- Address service concerns and improve provider satisfaction
Transition & Continuity
- Stabilize operations during leadership transition
- Document processes, workflows, and key initiatives
- Assist in onboarding and handoff to permanent Laboratory Director
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field (required)
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field (preferred)
Certifications
- ASCP (MLS/MT) or equivalent certification (required)
- Eligibility as a CLIA Laboratory Director (as applicable to complexity level)
Experience
- 5–10 years of progressive laboratory leadership experience
- Prior experience as a Laboratory Director or Manager in a hospital setting
- Experience with regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission)
- Interim or consulting leadership experience (preferred)

Pay: $2,500.00 - $3,500.00 per week
