What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Development /Operations Manager position at Amazing Grace African Supermart?
This is a hybrid role: you will manage day-to-day store operations and also drive business development by visiting other supermarkets, restaurants, and partners. A company car will be provided for business visits.You will work 5 days per week, 12 pm – 9 pm (1-hour unpaid break, 8 paid hours/day). Ownership covers Wednesdays and Sundays.Key Responsibilities
Store Operations (In-Store)
- Oversee daily operations from 12 pm – 9 pm (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat).
- Ensure the store is clean, organized, and fully stocked.
- Manage opening/closing procedures for your shift, cash handling, and daily reconciliation.
- Supervise and support 2 cashiers and a meat cutter during your shift.
- Ensure excellent customer service and fast checkout during peak hours (especially Fri–Mon).
Team Management
- Help create and manage weekly schedules for cashiers and meat cutter.
- Train staff on POS (Clover), customer service, and store standards.
- Monitor attendance, performance, and adherence to procedures.
Inventory & Vendor Management
- Work with suppliers (Sysco, meat suppliers, African/Caribbean distributors) to place and receive orders.
- Monitor stock levels to reduce waste and avoid stock-outs on fast-moving items.
- Support the owner in achieving a 50% gross margin by managing cost of goods and pricing.
Business Development (Outside the Store)
- Use a company car to visit:
- Other supermarkets,
- Restaurants,
- Caterers,
- Community organizations and churches
to promote our meat, cold meat, and produce offerings.
- Build and maintain wholesale/B2B relationships and accounts.
- Follow up on leads and track results from your visits.
- Work with ownership to develop simple promotions, bundles, and offers for B2B customers.
Reporting & Cost Control
- Review daily/weekly sales and basic reports (we use Clover and will be implementing QuickBooks).
- Help control labor hours and reduce avoidable costs (waste, returned item fees, etc.).
- Provide simple weekly updates to ownership on:
- Sales trends,
- Inventory issues,
- New B2B opportunities,
- Operational problems.
Schedule
- Days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
- Hours: 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm (1-hour unpaid break; 8 paid hours/day)
- Wednesdays & Sundays: Covered by owners (you may occasionally support remotely if needed)
Compensation
- Base Pay:
- $16/hour, 8 paid hours/day, 5 days/week (approx. 40 hours/week).
- Performance Bonus:
Monthly bonus based on:Example structure (explained during interview):
- Total monthly sales above a set target, and
- Growth in wholesale/B2B sales,
as long as we maintain healthy profit margins and labor costs.
- Bonus tied to sales above $50,000/month and extra B2B sales,
- Typical bonus range when targets are met: $100–$300/month.
- Company Car (Business Use):
- Car provided for business visits to supermarkets, restaurants, and partners.
- Fuel and maintenance covered for business use.
Requirements
- 2 years experience in retail, grocery, or restaurant operations (supervisor or manager level).
- Experience managing a small team (cashiers, kitchen, or store staff).
- Comfortable with inventory, vendors, and basic cost control.
- Able to use POS systems (Clover experience is a plus).
- Valid driver’s license and comfortable driving to visit customers and prospects.
- Strong communication and people skills.
- Hands-on: willing to be on the floor, help at the register, and jump in where needed.
- Available to work afternoons/evenings and weekends (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat).
