Position Summary
Red Pine Equipment is seeking an experienced and dependable Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic to join our Red Pines maintenance shop.
The Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic will inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain commercial trucks, trailers, diesel engines, and related heavy-duty equipment. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge, the ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment, and a commitment to completing safe, accurate, and timely repairs.
The ideal candidate will be able to independently diagnose mechanical and electrical concerns, communicate repair findings, maintain complete documentation, and work cooperatively with other members of the maintenance team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy-duty trucks, trailers, diesel engines, and related equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, air, hydraulic, emissions, and aftertreatment system concerns.
- Use computerized diagnostic software, scan tools, multimeters, pressure gauges, and other testing equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance services according to manufacturer and company specifications.
- Repair or replace engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, driveline components, and cooling-system components.
- Inspect and repair air-brake systems, suspension systems, steering components, wheel ends, and electrical systems.
- Diagnose and repair diesel exhaust fluid, diesel particulate filter, exhaust gas recirculation, and other emissions-related systems.
- Perform trailer repairs involving brakes, wheel ends, suspension, lighting, air systems, doors, floors, and structural components.
- Complete tire inspections, repairs, rotations, mounting, balancing, and replacements as needed.
- Perform DOT inspections when properly certified and authorized.
- Identify additional safety concerns or needed repairs during inspections.
- Clearly communicate diagnostic findings and recommended repairs to the Service Advisor and Shop Manager.
- Obtain approval before completing repairs outside the original work order.
- Complete repair orders with accurate descriptions of inspections, diagnostics, labor, parts, and completed repairs.
- Record diagnostic trouble codes, measurements, test results, and follow-up recommendations.
- Conduct road tests or operational tests when qualified and authorized.
- Follow manufacturer procedures, service information, technical bulletins, and company repair standards.
- Properly use, maintain, and secure shop tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, jacks, and service equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Properly handle oil, coolant, fuel, batteries, tires, filters, and other regulated materials.
- Follow lockout/tagout, lifting, personal protective equipment, fire prevention, and hazardous-material procedures.
- Assist other technicians with difficult repairs and share technical knowledge when appropriate.
- Participate in ongoing technical training and certification programs.
- Perform roadside or yard repairs when assigned and when conditions can be safely controlled.
- Perform other maintenance-related duties assigned by the Shop Manager.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous professional experience repairing heavy-duty trucks, trailers, diesel engines, or commercial equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems.
- Experience using computerized heavy-duty diagnostic equipment.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, air brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, and preventive maintenance.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, repair manuals, fault-code information, and technical service materials.
- Ability to provide or obtain required tools in accordance with company policy.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment within the shop and yard.
Certification Requirements
Candidates must possess relevant professional certification or documented technical training applicable to heavy-duty truck and diesel repair.
Preferred certifications include:
- State of Michigan Heavy-Duty Truck Repair certification.
- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications.
- DOT annual inspection certification.
- Brake inspector qualification.
- Manufacturer-specific engine or diagnostic certifications.
- Commercial driver’s license.
Candidates who possess some but not all preferred certifications may be considered based on experience, ability, and willingness to complete additional training.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Class 7 and Class 8 commercial vehicles.
- Experience servicing Freightliner, Detroit, Cummins, Paccar, Volvo, Mack, International, or similar equipment.
- Experience with commercial trailers, air-brake systems, aftertreatment systems, and computerized engine controls.
- Welding, fabrication, HVAC, alignment, or refrigeration experience.
- Experience working in a fleet or customer-service repair facility.

Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work beneath equipment.
- Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull tools and parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift or move heavier components with assistance or mechanical lifting equipment.
- Safely climb into and out of commercial trucks and trailers.
- Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, jacks, lifts, and shop machinery.
- Work in confined or difficult positions when completing repairs.
- Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, coordination, and mobility to safely inspect and repair equipment.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an active heavy-duty maintenance shop and may include outdoor or roadside work. Employees may be exposed to noise, dirt, grease, vehicle exhaust, chemicals, moving equipment, sharp objects, hot surfaces, weather conditions, and changing temperatures. Required personal protective equipment must be worn.
