Licensed Tradesman - Electrician

Education: High School Diploma/GED; Valid Pennsylvania driver's license; Master License required

Skills: Must have complete knowledge, understanding and application of methods, materials and tools of the trade; Knowledge of city electrical codes and inspection requirements in order to obtain electrical certificates; Physical and emotional stamina sufficient to work effectively in all areas of the job; Ability to work first or second shift; Sufficient language ability to follow the oral and written instructions necessary to prepare diagrams and/or blueprints and perform the duties of the position without close supervision; Maturity and ability to deal harmoniously and effectively with District personnel, students and parents.

Experience: Minimum five (5) years experience as an electrician in residential and commercial field; Master Electrician License for the City of Altoona required.

General Responsibilities

Maintains electrical equipment of the district's physical school plant in excellent condition so that full educational use of it may be made at all times. This includes responsibility for the safe condition of all electrical apparatus, plans layout of wiring, electrical fixtures, electrical apparatus and control equipment; prepares sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment; install controls and distribution apparatus; installs lighting fixtures and power equipment; connects power cables to equipment; tests continuity of circuits; measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit; repairs fire controls, emergency generators and plants; repairs electrical heating elements; installs lines for television outlets, computers and internet, etc.; estimates costs of electrical projects and repairs.

**Essential Duties: **

• Assumes responsibility for the safe condition of lighting fixtures, electrical apparatus, fixtures, wiring, air conditioning and refrigeration units and similar electrical elements in the facilities of the district.
• Plans layout of wiring, electrical fixtures, electrical apparatus and control equipment which minimizes waste of materials and provide for the future maintenance: prepares sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others.
• Installs controls and distribution apparatus and panels, such as switches, relays, circuit breakers, panels, fastening them in proper position for inspection; installs lighting fixtures and power equipment.
• Connects power cables to equipment, such as switches, electric ranges and motors including the installation of grounding leads.
• Tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safe operation of all components using proper instruments to detect hazards.
• Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit using such tools as Hacksaw, pipe threader and conduit bender: Pulls wire through conduit in proper manner.
• Repairs fire controls, emergency generators and plants, alternators, motors, intercommunication systems, pumps, blowers, fans and refrigeration machinery; test for short circuits; repair and replaces commutator brushes; removes and replaces fuses and defective lights.
• Repairs electrical heating elements.
• Installs lines for television outlets, computers and Internet, etc.; connects power supply to circuits of radios and televisions.
• Determines which repair jobs may be performed by him and which must be performed by outside contracts and advises supervisor of buildings and grounds accordingly.
• Instructs utility men of proper methods of procedure and proper use of tools in electrical repair work.
• Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains the inventory of district owned tools, equipment and supplies.
• Estimates costs o electrical projects and repairs.
• Uses all necessary small hand tools properly to perform tasks of the trade.
• Willing to work weekends and overtime when needed to handle emergency repairs and/or snow removal.
• Demonstrates regular and timely attendance.
  
  

Ancillary Duties

• Installs chains on vehicles when weather conditions warrant. Plows snow. Operates the BobCat for snow removal and/or excavation.
• Assists other maintenance workers for various types of projects.
• On call to assist with Mansion Park athletic events and concerts.
• Keeps equipment clean at all times by washing or polishing as needed.
• Reports any need for repairs or malfunctioning of equipment when operating District vehicles.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
