Position Summary
The Rural Water System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the rural water system. Duties include system monitoring, maintenance, repair, water quality testing, and customer service. The operator ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and supports continuous delivery of clean, safe drinking water to system members.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine maintenance on wells, pumps, chemical feed systems, meters, hydrants, valves, and distribution infrastructure.
- Complete utility locates through 811's "Call before you dig" program.
- Assist with line repairs, service leaks, meter replacements, flushing, and inspections.
- Operate and maintain utility vehicles and equipment (skid loaders, mini excavators, vac trailers).
System Operation & Monitoring
- Monitor system performance, including wells, pumps, treatment equipment, reservoirs, and distribution components.
- Perform daily system checks, record operational data, and report abnormal conditions.
- Respond to alarms, outages, and emergency situations.
Water Quality & Compliance
- Collect water samples for bacteriological, chemical, and regulatory testing.
- Conduct on-site testing and maintain accurate compliance records.
- Assist in preparing reports for regulatory agencies.
Customer Service
- Respond professionally to customer inquiries regarding water quality, pressure issues, leaks, or service requests.
- Perform service reconnects/disconnects and troubleshoot customer concerns.
- Maintain positive relationships with members, contractors, and the public.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily logs, maintenance records, and work orders accurately.
- Use GIS, SCADA, and system mapping tools (training provided).
- Track inventory and maintain organized tools, equipment, and facilities.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs., work outdoors in varying weather, and perform manual labor.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Willingness to participate in a regular on-call rotation (nights, weekends, holidays).
- Ability to work occasional after-hours emergencies outside normal rotation.
- Willingness/ability to achieve operator certification.
Preferred
- Experience in water systems, utilities, plumbing, construction, or mechanical trades.
- State Water Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe).
- Familiarity with pumps, valves, chemical feed systems, heavy equipment, or SCADA systems.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Indoor and outdoor work year-round.
- Participation in regular on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Emergency after-hours work may be required outside normal rotation.
- Work may involve confined spaces and heights over 50 feet.
- PPE required; training provided.
SDARWS Apprenticeship Program
The South Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems offers a two-year apprenticeship program with coursework and on-the-job training. Apprentices receive progressive wage increases and are expected to become certified through the State of South Dakota upon completion.
