Summary
The Science Department at The Altamont School seeks a dynamic and experienced High School Science Teacher. We are interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about teaching AP Chemistry. In addition, the preferred candidate will also teach upper school science courses such as Anatomy or AP Psychology. The teacher will create and maintain a strong program and a positive learning environment for fostering student growth; by encouraging students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to obtain a good foundation for growth and development; establishes effective rapport with students and parents; assists students in developing positive feelings/feedback/critiques toward themselves and others. We want supportive faculty who are lifelong learners and model that for our students. Our educators are expected to engage in on-going professional development, be open to interdisciplinary opportunities, and actively help further our school's strategic initiatives of community and inclusion.
Essential Functions
- Plan, supervise, and implement the AP Chemistry curriculum and prepare our students to succeed on the AP Chemistry exam.
- Deliver lesson plans using a variety of instructional materials that facilitate active learning with clear learning and teaching objectives.
- Ensures objectives are met through effective teaching, high expectations, and sound learning in an inclusive, engaging classroom environment.
- Utilize technological modalities and hands-on laboratory work and research to further lesson effectiveness.
- Demonstrate proficient use of the various technology tools supporting our curriculum.
- Monitor, document, and assess student progress, maintaining close communication with parents and appropriate school personnel.
- Provides students with feedback, critiques, encouragement, and support. Consistently assessing student achievement through formal and informal assessments.
- Has strong classroom management skills for effectively monitoring student behavior.
- In conjunction with the Science Department, maintain a supportive role in the setup, support, and inventory of laboratory equipment and chemicals.
- Improves their teaching performance through continued professional development.
- Support the mission, policies, and practices of The Altamont School.
Qualifications:
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in the physical sciences. Ideally has an education background with general knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Ideally has prior science teaching experience. Prepared to teach age-appropriate classes for high school.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in academic science standards for Alabama.
- Flexibility, organization, decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Has strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of students.
- Ability to conduct laboratory experiments while following all safety protocols. Ability to keep the laboratory inventory stored properly and organized.
- Experience using a variety of technology tools in the educational setting.
