AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/25/2026

Department: Transportation Demand Management (TDM)

Description

Alta Planning Design is hiring an Outreach Specialist (TDM Programs Level I or II, based on qualifications) for our Atlanta office. This is a role for someone who finds meaning in the work of connecting people to places and who genuinely believes that transit, biking, carpooling, and walking are not just alternatives to driving alone, but better ways to move through communities.

This role will support a portfolio of Atlanta-based Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) that Alta manages, working directly with employers and commuters across the region - building relationships, helping commuters navigate their options, making the case for cleaner commutes, and connecting people with the resources and support to actually make a change. It's people-centered work with tangible impact, and it sits at the intersection of transportation equity, environmental resilience, and community wellbeing.

If that sounds like the kind of work you've been looking for, we'd love to talk.

About Alta

Alta is a mission‑driven company working to mitigate climate change and advance safety and social justice by shaping sustainable, people‑centered communities. We bring together expertise across planning, design, engineering, education and encouragement programs, and community engagement to help communities thrive. Our work is grounded in the belief that how places are designed and experienced has a profound impact on equity, health, and opportunity—and that people should always be at the heart of those decisions.

Founded in 1996, Alta was at the forefront of the active transportation movement and has spent nearly 30 years partnering with communities to imagine a more connected, resilient, and inclusive future. Today, with more than 225 staff across the United States and beyond, we are a global leader in creating environments that support everyday life, strengthen human connection, and respond to the challenges of a changing world. Alta offers the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines, contribute to meaningful work at every scale, and be part of a team committed to making lasting, positive change for people and the places they call home

Day to Day

The Role

Alta manages several regional Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) – largely employer-facing organizations that develop commute options programs to change how people get to and from work. This role directly supports that work, helping employees across the Atlanta region rethink their commutes and access resources that make sustainable options (transit, carpool, biking, etc.) more practical and appealing.

The Outreach Specialist (TDM Programs Level I or II) will spend much of their time on the following types of project work:
  • Planning and staffing in-person outreach events, including transportation fairs, kiosks/expos, tabling, lunch-and-learns, and other in-person engagement tactics (Estimated 50 % of the time).
  • One-on-one interaction with commuters, knowledgeably and persuasively discussing travel options (such as transit and carpooling), transportation service details, specialized program offerings, and more. This could occur in person, via virtual meetings, email, telephone, digital platforms, and more. (Estimated 30% of the time).
  • Assisting project managers with various administrative tasks in support of program efforts. (Estimated 20% of the time).
While no two days in this role are exactly alike, here are common work activities that will make up your week:
  • Setting up and staffing outreach efforts at project sites across the Atlanta region. These events connect commuters with valuable, free information for sustainable travel options, commuter programs, and services to choose from when getting to work.
  • Participating in employer-facing outreach, transportation program related sales, and partnerships, with the support and collaboration of other team members and local partners
  • Planning and staffing outreach efforts such as community events, transportation fairs, employee benefits fairs, lunch and learns, tabling at local fairs and festivals, and other in-person engagement tactics.
  • Supporting transportation mode-specific campaigns, such as Bike to Work Day, travel behavior incentive programs, and Try Transit events.
  • Coordinating with community partners (e.g., neighborhood association representatives and nonprofit organizations) to organize custom community events for program participants (e.g., neighborhood walks, beginner group bike rides, group bus trips to community destinations)
  • Coordinating logistics for events, including transporting equipment, managing deliveries and staffing/facilitating/leading planned events.
  • Representing Alta’s clients and specific programs warmly and professionally
  • Supporting data collection tasks to inform program measurement and evaluation, potentially including tracking event-related details and metrics (e.g., reach and materials distribution), conducting digital or verbal surveys and implementing focus groups.
  • Collaborating with and supporting project staff on varied tasks such as inventory management, material organization, meeting coordination, printing, mailings, flyer distribution, ordering food or supplies, and other logistics.
  • Communicating frequently and appropriately with project staff at Alta and Alta clients through email, Microsoft Teams, and/or phone.
  • Assisting Alta project managers with project management work, including data analysis, project reports, invoicing, and budgeting.
  • General support to project managers on varied tasks such as inventory management, material organization, meeting coordination, printing/collation, large mailings, ordering food, transporting materials, and other logistics
