The primary purpose of this position is to manage the activities of staff members in the inorganic wet chemistry department, planning, organizing, directing, supervising and providing support as needed in the various areas of the department.

  • Ensuring high quality data for the department are produced in accordance with published methodologies, EPA methods, Standard Methods, and standard operating procedures.
  • Actively participate in the laboratory’s Quality System.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of the Inorganic Wet Chemistry Department including management of all personnel and capital resources available to successfully meet client and laboratory turnaround times (TAT).
  • Perform technical review of existing and new methodologies, SOPs and provide appropriate input to the lab management.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and standards to meet requirements.
  • Insure that quality assurance and quality control programs for laboratory analysis and instrumentations are properly developed, implemented and maintained.
  • Maintain safe working conditions and a clean, orderly work area at all times.
  • Coordinate and supervise all wet chemistry staff and ensure all required safety procedures are consistently met.
  • Ensure the department follows SOPs and methodologies without deviation.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of defined areas; keep abreast of state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Write, update and review in-house SOPs to ensure the analytical departments are operating in a manner which produces legally defensible data for laboratory clientele.
  • Perform duties under pressure arising from large sample volumes, short holding-times and fast turn-around times.
  • Keep laboratory equipment repaired and ensure preventive maintenances are up-to-date.
  • Ensure all work is completed within prescribed deadlines.
  • Investigate all regulations and technical requirements for environmental programs such as Federal regulations and programs, State Government regulation and programs for all States where samples are collected.
  • Field client inquires as a direct response to their analytical results and assist the Project Managers with technical client inquires as needed.
  • Able to develop and maintain high quality laboratory systems and able to work with the Quality Assurance manager to ensure ALS compliance with the Department of Defense (DoD) quality systems manual, NELAC, and any other program requirements.
  • Strong industry specific computer skills knowledge including Microsoft Word, Excel, data processing software, LIMS or similar scientific database in order to manage laboratory production of all laboratory analytical departments.

  • Must be capable of working irregularly scheduled hours, overtime, nights and weekends as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4 year college degree from an accredited educational institute in the chemical, environmental, biological, or physical sciences or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in an environmental laboratory.
  • Previous laboratory supervisory experience is extremely desirable.
  • General chemical, biological, and physical laboratory testing methods and procedures, including qualitative and quantitative analyses.
  • Knowledgeable in ISO 17025 standards, NELAC and PA State requirements for environmental laboratories.
  • Computer skills, Microsoft programs.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers and managers.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate equipment and handle glassware.
  • Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate equipment.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for 100% of an 8-hour day
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
