JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Veterinary Technician Manager, perform daily oversight of the veterinary technicians and perform all the duties of a veterinary technician.
SUPERVISOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Daily supervision of veterinary technicians.
- Provide input and participate in performance evaluations.
- Assist with onboarding/training and mentoring of new veterinary technicians, including training for other employees, as needed.
- Provide leadership, animal health training, and guidance to less experienced technical staff and other laboratory personnel.
- Assist with the daily schedule.
- Responsible for managing all supplies needed for the department in coordination with the Vet Tech Manager.
- Perform routine inspections of autoclave, anesthesia machines, and any other surgical/clinical equipment. This can include training the veterinary technicians to perform this task, but overall responsibility remains with the Veterinary Technician Supervisor.
- Assist veterinary staff in the documentation and triage of all animal health cases.
- Oversee group treatments and the associated paperwork.
- Ensure social exemptions are submitted, if needed. Assist behavior team with social housing in the clinics.
- Understand the regulatory requirements and ensure all veterinary service areas are always within compliance.
- Maintain infant equipment and assist with training staff on infant care.
- Perform and oversee daily animal health observations, animal returns, clinical duties, and outpatient treatments.
- Ensure the clinic, surgical areas and any support spaces are stocked appropriately.
- Provide input for SOP revisions and/or the composition of new SOPs. Assist in the implementation and training of new SOPs.
- Perform all the duties of a veterinary technician.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
VETERINARY TECHNICIAN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct regular clinical rounds and routine health monitoring.
- Perform animal exams and clinical rounds.
- Respond to animal health issues.
- As appropriate, recommend, administer, and record routine treatments.
- Notify veterinary staff and other appropriate personnel of conditions that are indicative of pain and distress or other abnormal findings.
- Perform routine veterinary technical skills including but not limited to the following:
o Administration of various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes, etc.,
o Bandage/wrapping techniques,
o Venipuncture techniques,
o Vaginal and rectal swabs,
o Proficient animal restraint techniques,
o Trauma repair under the direction of a veterinarian,
o Monitor critical care animals (i.e., place IV catheters, monitor fluid therapy, etc.)
- Generate animal treatment records and perform, track, and schedule follow-ups.
- Maintain accurate record keeping procedures for the veterinary department.
- Perform routine inventory and stocking of all pertinent areas (drugs/supplies).
- Assist in organizing and maintaining the vet exam rooms.
- May perform routine technical and husbandry functions (general housekeeping).
- Assist in surgery and peri-surgery care, e.g. provide/monitor anesthesia, prepare surgical packs, and administer supportive therapy.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide daily supervision of veterinary technicians.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Good leadership and communication skills.
- Experience in clinical research, veterinary assistance, clinical treatments, or the equivalent.
- Good reading, writing, and verbal skills.
- Good math skills.
- Basic computer skills and use of Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to work unsupervised as well as in a team environment.
- Demonstrate understanding of Standard Operating Procedures.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The employee must have a high school diploma or general education degree. A college degree is preferred. Graduate of a collegiate veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities or equivalent program in veterinary technology is highly preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents, including treatment protocols, standard operating procedures, and other instructions. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of employees, including division managers.
REASONING ABILITY:
Must be able to make decisions related to animal clinical care and must know when to contact the veterinarian. Must have sufficient skills and abilities to know when there are problems within primate groups and be able to work with appropriate personnel to stabilize groups. The individual must be able to deal with a wide diversity of problems, propose resolutions, and implement approved resolutions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.
JOB SPECIFIC DEMANDS:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds repeatedly.
- Ability to capture a primate up to 30 pounds with a 7-pound net.
- Ability to perform all job functions in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs repeatedly, with or without carrying additional weight.
- Must have good vision or corrective eyewear.
- Must work weekends and holidays.
- Overtime required.
