Hours/Schedule: (Flexible with Hours)
Monday through Friday
- 6:00am to 2:30pm
- 6:30am to 3:00pm
- 7:00am to 3:30pm
- 8:00am to 4:30pm
- 9:00am to 5:30pm
No scheduled weekend coverage, assistance may be requested to support needs during employee leave or staffing shortages.
Position Objective
The Laboratory Assistant prepares samples for analysis and to be sent to outside labs. The position monitors for quality, efficiency, and safety in the proper handling of specimens, supplies, and equipment.
Essential Responsibilities
The following description of responsibilities to be performed is not intended to be all-inclusive. Rather, it focuses on the major tasks that must be accomplished.
- Restock the laboratory departments as needed
- Collect and utilize appropriate preparation, processing, and evaluation procedures for all specimens, including maintaining appropriate records for specimens, slides, and data conforming to all HFAP and CLIA guidelines
- Train new students and new employees as needed
- Perform patient registrations and order tests per Providers written orders
- Perform Urine Drug Screen collections and Breath Alcohol tests
- Specimen Collection
- Perform phlebotomy procedures
- Proficient in capillary, venous, and arterial blood collection
- Obtain or collect body fluids, tissue, and other substances to aid the laboratory in determining abnormal findings
- Perform phlebotomy procedures

- Perform all other related duties as assigned in a professional and responsive manner
- Demonstrate the ability to use relevant equipment

Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge in medical terminology
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory
- Maintain knowledge of specimen requirements
- Understand the importance of patient identification and correct specimen labelling
- Ability to help maintain an environment of privacy, safety, and integrity for all patients, at all times
- Knowledge in proper specimen collection to include: specimen requirements, integrity of specimen, isolation precautions, timed blood draws, and aseptic technique
- Ability to give instructions clearly and accurately for patient collected specimens
