Salary Range: 55,000 – 65,000 USD Annually

The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Total compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.

ABOUT THE TEAM: As part of ALM’s global newsroom, the litigation team is focused on cutting-edge legal issues, consequential court cases, emerging trends in litigation—and the lawyers, judges and other professionals who are part of that world. The Philadelphia based reporter will join a mix of senior and more junior reporters working collaboratively with editors across the country, including geographic centers like New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Miami and Atlanta. Our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality journalism and innovative thinking as we cover this area for a sophisticated business audience.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll be covering state and federal courts in Pennsylvania, with particular emphasis on Philadelphia, the state Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
  • You will own and master the mass tort national practice area in collaboration with a senior litigation reporter.
  • You’ll cover everything from important court decisions to reviewing filings and identifying key suits, as well as tracking litigation trends and undertaking investigative and enterprise reporting related to litigation and litigators in Pennsylvania.
  • You will make connections and draw comparisons between your local and regional reporting and those of colleagues across ALM’s global newsroom to spot national trend stories and projects that might appear in multiple publications.
  • Your audience will be highly sophisticated Pennsylvania attorneys and judges, as well as others working in the law sector across the nation.
  • You’ll produce breaking news stories on tight deadlines for readers of Law.com, Legal Intelligencer and other publications in major legal industry markets.
  • You will also produce enterprise articles, including features and investigative pieces, while juggling daily news commitments. As a baseline, our reporters are expected to file at least one story a day and one enterprise story a week. Most exceed that.
  • You will write authoritatively on litigation issues of critical interest to legal industry professionals.
  • You will work well in a team environment with colleagues based around the world.

We need someone who loves talking to and cultivating sources, knows how to mine a beat for scoops and can find insights into legal stories that are often well covered by mainstream news outlets. This is a high-profile assignment for a reporter who wants to write for a national audience, and we are looking for an individual who is equipped to break news, write sophisticated analysis and have a voice on social media.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to write clearly, engagingly and authoritatively—and on a deadline
  • Must be able to establish and nurture relationships with lawyers, judges and lawmakers
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and can juggle features, analysis and a stream of daily stories on tight deadlines
  • Must be willing and eager to cover court hearings and trials in person
  • Must be able to write one to three stories a day and at least two enterprise stories each month
  • Must have a positive, can-do attitude
  • Must have good communication and time management skills and be a team player, good at collaboration
  • Must be creative, curious and enthusiastic about using social platforms, video, interactive data, and other digital tools to enhance reporting and connect with readers
  • Ideally, two to three years of experience in a daily news environment and some experience with legal or business journalism is preferred, though recent grads are welcome
  • Work in the newsroom at least twice each week
  • Based in or around Philadelphia
