School-Based Sign Language Interpreter

Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sign Language Interpreter to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing within a school-based setting in the Kent, WA area. This professional will facilitate communication between students, teachers, staff, peers, and families, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities and promoting student success in both academic and extracurricular environments.
The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting student achievement, demonstrates strong ASL interpreting skills, and thrives in a collaborative educational setting.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during classroom instruction, assemblies, meetings, field trips, and school-related activities.
- Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, school staff, peers, and families.
- Interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English accurately and professionally.
- Support students' participation in academic, social, and extracurricular activities.
- Collaborate with educational teams to ensure students have appropriate access to instruction and school services.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and professional standards.
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions as required.
- Promote an inclusive learning environment that fosters student independence and engagement.
- Follow ethical standards and best practices for educational interpreting.
Qualifications
Required
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience providing sign language interpretation in educational, community, or related settings.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and effective communication strategies.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, educators, and families.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.
Preferred
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score meeting applicable requirements.
- RID Certification (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).
- Previous experience in a K-12 educational setting.
- Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.
