Job Summary:
The Direct Current (DC) Technician will focus on the installation, reinstallation and commissioning of DC power systems, battery distribution fuse bays (BDFBs), low-voltage cabling and related infrastructure. The ideal candidate is safety focused, mechanically skilled and comfortable working in active telecom environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Electrical Installation & System Setup:
- Travel to cell tower and telecom hub sites to perform installations, upgrades, and maintenance of DC power infrastructure.
- Install, reinstall, and integrate Battery Distribution Fuse Bays (BDFBs), battery banks, and DC distribution systems.
- Perform DC power terminations, low-voltage cabling, grounding, and battery connections.
- Set up wiring, conduit, and cable tray/ladder racking systems designed for DC circuits, ensuring compliance with customer standards and industry codes.
- Install and configure DC power equipment including rectifiers, inverters, power supplies, and DC distribution panels.
- Rehome circuits from legacy BDFBs and equipment to newly installed systems.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:
- Troubleshoot DC electrical components including rectifiers, battery systems, BDFBs, and associated telecom power equipment.
- Use diagnostic tools such as voltmeters, ammeters, and resistance testers to evaluate continuity, voltage, and current in DC circuits.
- Analyze and resolve DC system malfunctions, identifying root causes and performing necessary repairs.
- Redress and rework cabling within bays, ladders, and equipment to meet customer and installation playbook standards.
System Testing and Compliance:
- Conduct testing of DC electrical systems to verify voltage, current, load characteristics, and overall performance.
- Ensure all installations meet NEC, OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant job site.
Verify integrity of battery systems and DC-powered equipment to prevent potential hazards.
Blueprint Reading and Documentation:
- Read and interpret drawings, schematics, work orders, and installation documentation.
- Complete job documentation including redlines and project closeout reports.
- Ensure installations meet project specifications and customer standards.
Training & Supervision:
- Lead and mentor apprentice technicians in DC system installation and safe work practices.
- Provide guidance on installation, operation, and maintenance of telecom DC power systems.
- Direct team members to ensure quality workmanship and adherence to safety protocols.
Prefabrication & Efficiency Improvements:
- Identify opportunities for prefabrication of DC components to improve efficiency and reduce installation time.
- Recommend improvements to installation practices, system functionality, and workflow efficiency.
Decommissioning & Site Restoration:
- Decommission and remove legacy power equipment and ladder racking as required.
- Stage removed equipment on site per customer instructions.
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- 2 years of experience in telecom or data center power installations
- Hands-on experience with DC power systems, BDFBs and low voltage cabling
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively
- Knowledge of grounding, bonding and cable management standards
- OHSA 10 certification (or ability to obtain)
- Highschool diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with OmniOn, Vertiv or similar DC power equipment
- Cell tower or central office (CO) experience
- OSHA 30 certification
Physical Requirements:
- Extensive travel (up to 75-90%)
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to work at height, on ladders and in tight spaces
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel and work with tools for extended periods
- Willingness to work night, weekends and overtime as required
