Job Summary: The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered care throughout the surgical experience, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. The RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and efficient surgical procedures, while also serving as an advocate for the patient and their family.
Key Responsibilites
Preoperative Care:
- Conduct preoperative assessments, including reviewing patient history, medications, and allergies.
- Educate patients and their families about the surgical procedure, including preoperative and postoperative instructions.
- Prepare patients for surgery by administering medications, starting IVs, and ensuring informed consent is obtained.
Postoperative Care:
- Monitor patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or recovery room, assessing their condition and ensuring a smooth recovery.
- Manage postoperative pain and provide wound care as needed.
- Educate patients and their families on post-surgical care, including medication instructions, activity limitations, and follow-up appointments.
Patient Safety and Advocacy:
- Ensure patient safety by adhering to surgical protocols, including timeouts, counting instruments and sponges, and maintaining sterile fields.
- Advocate for the patient's needs and preferences throughout the surgical process.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies or complications during surgery, initiating appropriate interventions.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other team members to ensure seamless surgical care.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and their families, providing updates and answering questions.
- Participate in surgical team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
Professional Development:
- Maintain current knowledge of surgical nursing best practices through continuing education and certifications.
- Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and seminars related to perioperative nursing.
- Uphold the standards and policies of the healthcare facility and the nursing profession.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in surgical or perioperative setting preferred.
- Experience as a scrub or circulating nurse is a plus
EDUCATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Current RN license through LSBN
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred
- Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred
SPECIAL SKILL, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong clinical and technical skills in the perioperative setting.
- Ability to anticipate and respond to the needs of the surgical team and patients.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems. CPSI experience a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The RN in Perioperative Services may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to stand for long periods and perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting or moving patients and equipment.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials, with adherence to safety protocols required
