Minimum Requirements

  • J.D. or L.L.B. from an accredited law school, an existing license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, AND one (1) year of experience mentoring or supervising attorney staff.

Candidates who have significant experience in both adult trial and pretrial practice and have experience in the use of expert witnesses, investigative requests, and some experience with appellate practice is a plus.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Managing Attorney oversees a staff of line attorneys in a given division. In coordination with other members of the management team and Directors, the Managing Attorney assigns, oversees, and balances attorney’s workloads among other responsibilities.

Overview

Duties:

  • Works closely with the Director, Deputy Directors, Managers, and Chief Investigator in developing an understanding of current/future department needs.
  • Directly supervises the duties and job responsibilities of division attorneys and support staff; schedules individual and group supervision on a regular basis to monitor caseloads.
  • Tracks progress of department and provides monthly statistics to the Deputy Director.
  • Oversees case carrying attorneys in all aspects of their job, including but not limited to supervision in the areas of case strategies and tactics, case preparation, documentation and management, client contact and client management, workplace and professional relationships and contacts, conflict analysis, written and oral advocacy skills, and office policies and procedures.
  • Provides caseload and courtroom coverage for absent attorneys when appropriate and supports attorneys in their job performance.
  • Evaluates and reviews attorney performance in all relevant areas and implements a corrective action plan for attorneys demonstrating less than satisfactory work in any relevant performance area.
  • Responds to formal and informal concerns, complaints and comments from individuals concerning attorney and staff performance.
  • Recommends staff and attorney reassignments within the office when necessary.
  • Conducts staff meetings, reviews, and the approval of time-off requests in the Deputy Director’s absence.
  • Performs additional duties as needed by the Director and/or Deputy.

Knowledge Of

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Appellate Procedure, Rules of Evidence, and other applicable law.
  • Management principles and procedures; principles of supervision; and management of a legal environment.

Skill In

  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Westlaw, Lexis, and other related case management software.

Ability To

  • Maintains civil relationships with all clients, co-workers, judges, court personnel, opposing counsel, law enforcement officers, witnesses, and the general public.
  • Provide responsible leadership.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with staff.
  • Represent the Office of the Public Defender at periodic appearances before civic groups, schools, and community events.

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
