Minimum Requirements

  • A Registered Nursing Degree/Diploma from an accredited college or university AND a minimum of three (3) years of skilled nursing experience as a supervisor in a Long-Term Care (LTC) facility.
  • Applicants must have a current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the practicing state prior to appointment.
  • Must have current CPR certification at the time of hire.
  • Must be able to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary; will be on call 24 hours seven (7) days a week.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offers of employment.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Kane Community Center Administrator, the incumbent will plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the Nursing Department in accordance with Professional Nursing Law and current Federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing the facility.

Overview

Duties:

  • Plans, supervises, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the Nursing Department, as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facilities.
  • Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss census changes, resident changes in status, and complaints or concerns.
  • Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and termination of nursing personnel.
  • Evaluates work performance of all nursing personnel and implements discipline according to operational policies; oversees nursing schedules to ensure resident needs and regulatory and budget standards are met.
  • Performs daily rounds to observe residents and ensure nursing needs are being met; may provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) or facility assessment activities, i.e., carrying out duties assigned as part of a performance improvement committee as required.
  • Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team, physicians, consultants, and community agencies to identify and resolve issues and improve the quality of services.
  • Conducts observations of nursing care and supervises the development of in-service education to ensure the nursing staff are competent in current knowledge and skills.
  • Monitors, assists, and implements the infection control program in accordance with current infection control guidelines to prevent the development and transmission of disease and infection.
  • Assists in the preparation of inspection surveys, staff in-service training on survey processes, and participation in mock surveys; implements follow-up required to rectify to any inspection violations.
  • Oversees resident incidents and concerns daily to identify any unusual occurrences and reports them promptly to the Administrator and/or state agency for appropriate action; protects residents from abuse and cooperates with all investigations.
  • Acts in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Administrator.

  • Utilizing electronic health records.

Ability To

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Seek new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
  • Manage and direct a large and culturally diverse workforce.
  • Communicate with medical and nursing staff as well as other departments.
  • Work with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people within a long-term care facility.
  • Plan, organize, direct, control, coordinate, and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care and treatment provided by both professional nursing staff and direct care staff in all resident areas.
  • Ensure delivery of compassionate quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate staff coverage on the units, general cleanliness, and maintaining optimal resident functions.
  • Promote safe work practices, safety rules, and accident prevention procedures to prevent employee injury and illness.
  • Meet general health requirements according to facility policy, including medical and physical exams and checking immunity status to various infectious diseases.
  • Assist in evacuating residents during emergency situations.
  • Work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays as necessary. On call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
