Job Summary:
The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and school-related events. This position ensures that safety standards and district policies are followed while maintaining discipline and order on the bus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a school bus along designated routes and according to a set time schedule.
- Ensure the safety of students during boarding, transit, and exiting the bus.
- Maintain order and discipline among students while following district conduct policies.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle.
- Report mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Comply with traffic regulations and school transportation policies.
- Maintain accurate records such as mileage, time logs, and incident reports.
- Communicate professionally with parents, students, school staff, and supervisors.
- Participate in required training, safety drills, and certifications.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Clean driving record.
- Successful background check and drug screening.
- Must have least three (3) years in school transportation operations, preferred
- Valid certifications in First Aid and CPR, or have the ability to obtain these certifications within 60 days of hire, preferred
- Must possess a valid City of New Orleans bus driver certificate issued by the Department of Safety and Permits CPNC.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time while operating a vehicle.
- Requires repetitive use of arms and legs (e.g., steering, using foot pedals).
- Must be able to bend, kneel, and reach in order to check under seats and around the vehicle.
- Ability to assist students on and off the bus, including those with disabilities, which may involve lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Visual and auditory ability to monitor student behavior and respond to emergency situations.
- Works primarily in a vehicle environment; occasional exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
- Exposed to noise levels typical of vehicle operation and student activity.
- May be exposed to traffic hazards while driving.
- Intermittent exposure to cleaning solutions, fuel, and other vehicle-related substances.
- Responsible for adhering to strict safety guidelines and schedules.
