Position: Assistant Mechanic
Location: Transportation
Bargaining Unit: Minnesota School Employee Association
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Essential Functions
Monitors working conditions of vehicles; checks fuel, oil and fluid levels; cleans bus including sweeping floor, removing trash, wiping windows; checks all lights, gauges and switches; wash vehicles, scrub floors and walls.
Drives School bus routes.
Helps keep shop area clean and free of hazards.
Summer work involves cleaning/detailing of school buses.
Assists mechanics in preparing buses for state inspections; assists mechanics with mechanical problems to include repairs on engines, brakes, tires, seats and heaters; assists with routine and preventative servicing of vehicles; assists with bus retrieval when mechanical problems occur; assists driver to correct problems; assists with emergency repairs as needed.
Documents mileage records for maintenance purposes; performs basic data entry.
Assists with inventory of parts and supplies; opens garage and vehicles; recommends alternatives to out-of-service buses; on-call for bus problems.
Assists with daily operations of shop services; attends meetings, workshops and training as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of District policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of the School Crisis Planning Guide; general knowledge of stop arm violation and pre-trip inspection forms and log books; thorough knowledge of mileage recording documents; thorough knowledge of state and federal transportation requirements; thorough knowledge of the operation of mechanical tools and tools of the trade (drills, grinders, saws, air compressors, wrenches, air tools, torches etc.); ability to comprehend written instructions; ability to prioritize tasks and pay attention to details; skill at hand-eye coordination; ability to drive in all weather conditions; ability to exercise confidentiality to with District information; ability to operate school bus, 2-way radio and PA system; thorough knowledge of basic grounds keeping equipment including shovels and snow equipment; general knowledge of phone and related devices; ability to make arithmetic calculations; general knowledge of First Aid; ability to implement and model the "Code of Conduct"; ability establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and parents.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience as a mechanic, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates/Technical degree preferred.
Special Requirements
Ability to Obtain a MN Class B License with School Bus and Passenger Endorsements.
First Aid and CPR preferred
Compensation: $24.70 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m
