Location: Chicago, IL (On-site)

Job Type: Part-Time

Schedule: 20 hours per week (flexible)

Pay: $26-32 per hour (based on experience)

About Us:

The Chicago Area Service Office (CASO) supports the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous by providing the resources and infrastructure needed to carry out its primary purpose: helping alcoholics who still suffer.

As a central service office, CASO assists thousands of individuals each year by connecting people to meetings, maintaining a comprehensive directory of over 2,400 meetings, and supporting volunteers who assist with answering the phones daily.

Working in partnership with the Chicago Area Service Assembly (CASA), CASO helps coordinate service efforts, maintain vital fellowship information, and preserve the history of AA in Chicago. Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Part-Time Bookkeeper who can independently manage bookkeeping and confidently complete month-end financials.

This role requires someone who can identify and fix issues—not just enter data. They should be comfortable taking ownership of financial accuracy and ensuring records are complete, clean, and reliable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
  • Process accounts payable (coding, approvals, payment prep)
  • Record deposits and track incoming funds
  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies and missing transactions
  • Prepare month-end financials:
  • Profit & Loss
  • Balance Sheet
  • Ensure all transactions are complete and properly coded before close
  • Make basic journal entries and adjustments
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation
  • Follow internal controls and approval workflows
  • Communicate issues clearly and proactively

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of bookkeeping experience
  • Proven experience completing month-end close
  • Strong understanding of general ledger and reconciliations
  • Experience preparing financial statements
  • Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Tech/Software Requirements:

Candidates must have hands-on experience with:

  • QuickBooks Online (daily use, not just familiarity)
  • Microsoft Excel (sorting, filtering, basic formulas, data review)
  • Shopify (reconciling sales, payouts, and fees to financial records)
  • MS Office Suite-Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and similar

Must Be Able to Demonstrate:

Candidates selected for interview should be able to clearly explain:

  • How you perform a bank reconciliation from start to finish
  • How you ensure all transactions are complete before month-end close
  • What you look for when reviewing a Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet
  • How you identify and correct coding errors or discrepancies

Preferred:

  • Nonprofit experience
  • Familiarity with fund-based accounting
  • Experience maintaining audit-ready books

What We Offer:

  • Flexible part-time schedule
  • Mission-driven work supporting the AA Fellowship
  • Small, collaborative team
  • Opportunity to take ownership of financial processes
  • Meaningful and impactful work
