JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Cultural Programs Manager, Coordinator, and program staff the apprentice position provides a variety of support functions to the Cultural Tourism operations at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Apprentices will be assigned to a variety of different positions across the organization including Research, Collections, Cultural Tourism, Business Operations, Marketing, and Evaluation. As part of the recruitment process, candidates will be able to express their preferences for any of the above positions. More details about each position will be provided as part of the interview process. Apprentices may support COVID-19 mitigation efforts as listed in ANHC’s COVID-19 Mitigation Plan, including disinfecting high-touch areas regularly to ensure the safety of staff and guests.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cultural Tourism Apprentice

  • Function as an ambassador to inform guests about the history and culture of Alaska Native communities.
  • Provide clear and concise information to visitors regarding Alaska Native culture.
  • Ensure that the Alaska Native Heritage Center is a safe, inviting, and comfortable place for all visitors.
  • Appropriately answer sensitive questions regarding Alaska Native history and culture to

educate visitors.

  • Monitor groups and ensure they do not adversely interact with property.
  • Facilitate cultural and educational programming, such as demonstrating Alaska Native games, dances, stories, and subsistence activities.
  • Review and learn the systems utilized for booking group tours.
  • Engage in meetings regarding cultural tourism operations.
  • Support external endeavors to facilitate development of cultural tourism operations.
  • Provide feedback about cultural tourism operations.
  • Analyze and input data as it relates to cultural tourism operations.
  • Review and learn procedures for private demonstrations and other cultural tourism

programming.

  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Individual will need good communication skills both verbal and written; must be able to lead and instruct a group in an effective manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to take initiative, multi-task, be a team-player, be flexible, adapt to shifting priorities, and prioritizing work.
  • Understand ANHC’s mission, direction, and history or be willing to receive training.
  • Be willing to learn, work and be always enthusiastic and helpful.
  • Have good attendance, be punctual and dependable.
  • Individual must have the ability to work independently, multi-task and have the ability to use good judgment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

  • Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office;
  • Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage Alaska

Summers.

Noise level:

  • Quiet to moderate.

Physical requirements:

  • Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop,

kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for ANHC’s mission and values and a desire to learn more about Alaska Native Culture and history.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: From $16.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
