THE POSITION: MHESD is seeking a qualified and culturally responsive Substitute Instructional Aide II to provide advanced support to students in grades K–8. The Substitute IA II works closely with certificated staff to deliver differentiated academic support, promote language development, and implement intervention strategies in alignment with state standards and district initiatives. This role requires specialized experience, instructional initiative, and the ability to support small groups with minimal supervision, often reinforcing classroom instruction and assisting with data-driven interventions. Key Responsibilities: Deliver structured instructional support to individual students and small groups under the direction of a certificated teacher. Assist with the implementation of lessons in core subjects (reading, writing, math, ELD) tailored for English Learners and at-risk students. Facilitate language development and academic vocabulary building through targeted instruction and scaffolded support. Support progress monitoring through the collection of student work, formative assessments, and data entry. Assist in administering and interpreting results of basic academic screenings or benchmark assessments. Utilize a variety of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials and methods to support student learning. Supervise students in classroom and non-classroom settings (e.g., recess, lunch, transitions). Support classroom management, including behavior redirection and reinforcement of classroom norms. Maintain student confidentiality and uphold all district policies regarding student well-being and instructional support.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: High school diploma or equivalent, passing of ACOE designated Instructional Assistant Test (waived with AA degree or higher, or 48 semester college units). Successful completion of the district’s Paraprofessional exam. Minimum 3 years of prior experience as an Instructional Aide. Demonstrated ability to work independently and adjust to the needs of diverse learners. CPR/First Aid Certification or willing to obtain prior to starting. Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish. Familiarity with CA ELD standards and instructional strategies for EL students. Experience working with low-income, underserved, or multilingual student populations.
