What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant II position at Alamance County Government?
Within this role the candidate will promote ACPL’s values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the technological, informational, reference and reading needs of library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary for the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Branch Manager. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, benefitted position requiring one evening per week and weekend rotation.
The best candidate will possess a strong commitment to providing customer-focused service for a positive library experience, assist patrons with one-on-one technology assistance, and to relate tactfully and courteously with a wide range of diverse patrons and community members.
- Promote ACPL’s values and mission.
- Follow and enforce established library policies and procedures.
- Assist with maintaining library collections.
- Provide one-on-one technology assistance to patrons.
- Revise and update the safety data sheets binder
- Planning, implementing and evaluating a wide range of in-house programs focused on digital literacy with an emphasis on cultivating the library as an asset to Alamance’s thriving community.
- Assist patrons through reference interactions, readers advisory inquires, and in the use of technology, including downloadable and online resources.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and practices of adult services, public libraries, business and workforce development trends by attending webinars, workshops, and conferences and through professional reading.
Additional Examples of Work Performed
- Make new library cards for patrons.
- Help patrons locate items in the library.
- Check materials in and out on patron accounts, and empty book returns.
- Receive payments for fines and fees.
- Assist patrons with self-check-out machines.
- Answer phone and route calls to appropriate staff.
- Create original and eye-catching displays.
- Take responsibility for the appearance of the library, by assisting with collection maintenance, including the condition of the shelves, bulletin boards, and displays.
- Assist with opening and closing the library.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Some college is required
- Previous customer service experience is required
- Flexibility in scheduling is required
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication is required
- Ability to work with individuals of diverse populations with respect and equitable service is required
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred
- Previous library experience is preferred
- Some experience in non-profit or small business field is preferred.
Computer Skills
Prior experience with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, internet searching, and social media is required.
Ability to learn and teach library technology is required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to push/pull loaded book carts and access materials on high and low shelves.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a busy environment
