What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biocurator position at Alakaina Family of Companies?
The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Biocurator to support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performance of molecular and genomic analysis procedures, in BSL-2 as required, aggregate, analyze, and interpret microbiological, molecular, sequence and phenotypic data in support of laboratory programs and projects.
- Utilize bioinformatics applications to support the analysis of laboratory-acquired data.
- Maintain and improve existing Microsoft Access databases to support the retention, retrieval, and analysis of experimental data.
- Develop and apply computer codes to support the processing and analysis of laboratory acquired data.
- Prepare technical reports and manuscripts for publication. Prepare monthly Biocurator BRMR Progress Reports concerning activities related to these tasks.
- With direction, provide culture identification and characterization data to support the reference material collection using current microbiological, molecular, and immunodiagnostic assays, to include sequencing on Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, and equivalent platforms.
- CONUS/OCONUS travel may be required in support of the diagnostic mission and/or presentation of scientific research.
- Train and competency assess Division Personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures and techniques.
REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
MS degree and ten plus (10 ) years' experience
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- General Molecular Biology Skills: PCR, DNA isolation and purification, Microarrays, DNA Synthesis, and Nucleic acid Sequencing
- Analytical Chemistry Skills: Protein and nucleic acid separation with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and electrophoresis, Mass Spectrometry, and DNA synthesis
- Computer Skills: Multiple Bioinformatics software suites, Basic knowledge in Programming Languages (Java, Perl, SQL, Python)
- BSL-3 training and experience
REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
- U.S. Citizen
- Must pass NACI background check.
- Must be willing to work in a BSL 2 laboratory.
- Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP programs.
