School Custodian Job Description
Position Title: School Custodian
Reports To: Head Custodian / School Principal / Director of Business and Facilities Operations
Location: Empower Community School

Position Overview
Empower Schools of Alabama is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented, and service-driven School Custodian to support the daily cleanliness, sanitation, and upkeep of school facilities. This role is responsible for executing custodial duties that ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
The School Custodian works under the direction of the Head Custodian and does not serve in a supervisory capacity, but is expected to demonstrate strong ownership, reliability, and pride in maintaining high facility standards.

Key Responsibilities
Daily Cleaning & Sanitation (Primary Role)
Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas
Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and high-touch surfaces to maintain hygiene standards
Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste according to established procedures
Maintain floors through stripping, waxing, buffing, and polishing as directed
Ensure assigned areas meet daily cleanliness expectations set by the Head Custodian
Facility Support (Execution-Focused)
Complete assigned work orders and custodial tasks accurately and efficiently
Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and replacing filters
Report maintenance issues, damages, or safety hazards promptly to the Head Custodian or supervisor
Assist with setting up and breaking down spaces for school events, meetings, and activities
Supplies & Equipment
Maintain and organize cleaning supplies in assigned areas
Notify the Head Custodian when supplies are low or equipment needs repair
Properly use and store custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines
Safety & Security
Follow all safety procedures related to cleaning, equipment use, and chemical handling
Assist in securing the building by locking doors and windows and ensuring spaces are properly closed at the end of shifts
Maintain awareness of safety concerns and report issues immediately
Team Collaboration
Work collaboratively with the Head Custodian and custodial team to ensure coverage of all areas
Follow daily schedules, assignments, and expectations set by the Head Custodian
Support school staff with facility needs in a professional and timely manner
Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor when interacting with students, staff, families, and visitors
Professional Responsibilities
Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, and consistent attendance
Follow direction and feedback from the Head Custodian and leadership
Maintain high standards of cleanliness and work quality
Adhere to all school policies, procedures, and expectations
Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred
Knowledge of basic cleaning methods and equipment
Ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Basic understanding of safety procedures
Ability to manage time and complete tasks efficiently
