About the Role
The Akron Hometowner is seeking a passionate Sports Reporter/Writer to lead coverage of Akron-Westfield Community School District athletics, as well as other local sports in the Akron area. This role is ideal for someone who loves high school sports and has a talent for capturing the excitement, emotion, and dedication of student-athletes and the communities that support them.
Responsibilities
- Cover Akron-Westfield sports year-round, including game stories, previews, and athlete features.
- Attend games, tournaments, and major school athletic events.
- Conduct interviews with coaches, athletes, and community members to bring stories to life.
- Write engaging and accurate sports articles under weekly deadlines.
- Take or coordinate photos to accompany your stories.
- Support online coverage by updating digital platforms and social media.
- Serve as a visible representative of the Hometowner while building strong relationships with the local athletic community.
Requirements
- Previous writing or newsroom experience preferred; sports reporting experience a strong plus.
- Solid knowledge of high school sports.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail.
- Comfortable conducting interviews and interacting with coaches and student-athletes.
- Ability to work evenings and some weekends during sports seasons.
- Familiarity with AP Style and basic photography helpful.
- Committed to fair, ethical, community-focused journalism.
