Akkodis is seeking an Optical Engineer for a 6 months contract with a client located in Mountain View, CA


Pay Range: $70/hr. - $75.00/hr. (The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.)


Job Description:

As a Hardware Engineer, you make broad contributions by delivering full pieces of a design or design validation project with minimal assistance. You create, design, develop, or validate hardware products/components. You update and maintain the internal design specifications, design validation plan, drawings, and standards to the latest configurations. You work extensively with engineers and managers for navigating project constraints. You solve all hardware issues during concept design, detailed design, product development, design validation, manufacturing, and delivery/deployment. You address commonly escalated issues by identifying and recommending creative ways to improve on solutions via selection of better methods or tools. You work within one or more teams to communicate knowledge related to process improvements, build a network, and contribute to cross-team collaborations. You demonstrate a deep and broad understanding of at least one hardware engineering discipline and hardware development process.


Required Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. in Physics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years work experience, including demonstrated laboratory experience in:
  • Optics & Lasers: Handling optical components, optical imaging systems, laser physics, and laser safety protocols.
  • Mechatronics: Setting up necessary embedded systems (e.g. microcontrollers, PLCs, linux computers) and integration of actuators & sensors for experiment control and data acquisition.
  • Optomechanics: Precise mounting and alignment of optical elements.
  • Software: Experience writing scripts and simple programs in LabView, Python, Matlab, and/or C (for embedded systems such as microcontrollers) for data acquisition, sensor & actuator control, and data analysis.


Responsibilities include:

  • Apply best practices to optimize complex or constrained hardware components to meet performance, power, and cost-effectiveness requirements. Use measurements or numerical methods to quantify impact of hardware design decisions and make design recommendations. Collaborate cross-functionally to optimize hardware performance under established design constraints. Responsible for meeting performance requirements of a complex hardware product or subsystem.
  • Identify flaws and issues with hardware components. Solve and analyze key issues, risks, or trade-offs, and address common hardware failures by suggesting corrective solutions.
  • Provide documentation of the hardware design, its implementation, or test/validation results throughout the product life cycle.
  • Review hardware designs (e.g., block diagrams, schematics, layouts, BOM, algorithms, protocols, link budgets) to anticipate and address issues/risks. Evaluate hardware performance and identify causes of deviation from prediction. Resolve test discrepancies. Perform measurements/simulations to validate design specifications. Suggest and implement design improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test Integration: Design, assemble, and troubleshoot lab setups involving lasers, sensors, and optomechanical components.
  • Data Acquisition: Write and maintain custom code (Python, Aerotech Aeroscript, MATLAB, or LabVIEW) to automate engineering tests and streamline data collection.
  • Calibration & Maintenance: Perform routine calibration of high-precision test systems to ensure data integrity.
  • Execution & Analysis: Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE), collect data, and perform analysis.
  • Documentation: Author detailed test reports and prepare presentations for the broader engineering team.
  • Multidisciplinary Support: Provide technical assistance across various projects, balancing priorities while working independently.


Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Clean Room Operations: Familiarity with working in a clean, controlled environment (ISO class 5/6/7).
  • Design of Experiments (DOE): Experience in structured statistical approaches to testing.
  • Advanced Mechatronics: Experience with motion control systems and precision stages.
