THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON BID AWARD

 

The Respiratory Care Provider Instructor supports the United States Air Force Critical Care Air Transport Team training program for the United States School of Aerospace Medicine En Route Care Training Department at CSTARS Cincinnati. The position provides expert-level respiratory care instruction, simulation support, and simulated ground and in-flight clinical oversight during training events to prepare CCATT students to manage respiratory emergencies, ventilator support, and complex patient care requirements in simulated operational environments. 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and deliver didactic, simulation, and hands-on lesson plan curricula as required.
  • Provide high-quality academic and hands-on instruction aligned with military and civilian air transport standards, including patient stabilization, aeromedical evacuation procedures, and in-flight critical care management.
  • Serve in assigned course roles during scheduled course weeks and perform scripted responsibilities as required.
  • Develop and deliver respiratory therapy training to ensure student competency in aerospace physiology, altitude medicine, emergency airway management, ventilation, pulmonary function testing, blood gas analysis, aeromedical equipment, flight adaptations, transport resuscitation, and rapid patient evacuation scenarios.
  • Educate students on barometric pressure changes, hypoxia risks, gas expansion effects, and other physiological challenges in air transport medicine.
  • Train students in advanced airway techniques, ventilator management, and adaptation of mechanical ventilation for altitude changes.
  • Teach students to interpret arterial blood gas results in flight conditions and adjust oxygen therapy accordingly.
  • Demonstrate setup, calibration, and operation of critical care transport ventilators, monitors, and oxygen systems used in military and civilian transport aircraft.
  • Conduct resuscitation training, including external cardiac compression and emergency intervention while transporting patients or while en route.
  • Prepare students for rapid patient evacuation scenarios, including adapting care in combat zones, disaster response, or humanitarian missions.
  • Engage in peer review and professional development by participating in simulated aeromedical evacuation exercises and continuing education programs.
  • Uphold safety and compliance standards in aeromedical education, including proper handling of medical equipment in flight conditions and adherence to military transport protocols.
  • Create and maintain lesson plans, educational objectives, and instructional materials in accordance with USAF CCATT guidelines.
  • Provide instruction using medical simulation equipment and high-fidelity manikins to replicate in-flight scenarios.
  • Support evaluation of student competencies through written exams, practical demonstrations, and oral evaluations.
  • Participate in curriculum review boards and incorporate current evidence-based clinical practices into training content.
  • Demonstrate best practices for respiratory monitoring, patient stabilization, and ventilator function during altitude changes and decompression.
  • Participate in after-action reviews and quality assurance initiatives after training exercises or real-world missions.
  • Advise the program Medical Director and/or Course Director on best practices for respiratory patient packaging, oxygen utilization, and disaster medical response.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of course delivery, student attendance, grades, and performance metrics.
  • Attend regular staff, administrative, and planning meetings with the Government medical training staff and contribute to curriculum planning initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the contract, task order, and applicable performance work statement.

Qualifications

  • Possess and maintain a Registered Respiratory Therapist credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care and either a Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist credential.
  • Possess and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Minimum five (5) years' clinical experience in acute care settings
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in critical care.
  • Possess and maintain a Basic Life Support certification.
  • Possess and maintain an Advanced Life Support certification.
  • Possess and maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification Preferred. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Prior military or Critical Care Air Transport aeromedical evacuation experience Preferred.
  • Ability to complete the Basic Instructors Course within 60 days of hire and complete 60 instructor hours. 
  • Knowledge of respiratory care principles, critical care practices, ventilator management, oxygen utilization, respiratory monitoring, airway management, and patient stabilization.
  • Knowledge of aerospace physiology, altitude medicine, aeromedical evacuation procedures, and in-flight critical care considerations.
  • Knowledge of military and civilian air transport standards and military transport protocols.
  • Ability to develop, deliver, and maintain didactic, simulation-based, and hands-on instructional materials and lesson plans.
  • Ability to operate and teach using medical simulation equipment and high-fidelity manikins to replicate in-flight scenarios.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with Government medical training staff, course leadership, students, and program stakeholders.
  • Ability to support safety, quality assurance, after-action review, peer review, and professional development activities.
  • Ability to protect sensitive, proprietary, confidential, and OPSEC-related information in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Ability to lift and or move up to 50 pounds and move human patient simulation equipment to and from training areas.
